INDIANAPOLIS — Father Arrested After 5-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead in Suspected Case of Abuse
A tragedy on Indianapolis’s east side has left a community reeling and law enforcement officials determined to uncover the full scope of what unfolded inside a quiet neighborhood home. Zachary Arnold, 41, is now behind bars after his 5-year-old daughter, Zara Arnold, was found dead inside their residence Monday morning in what authorities are investigating as a possible case of fatal child abuse.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a 911 call just before 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, from a home located in the 200 block of North Lasalle Street, north of Washington Street. According to police dispatch logs, the caller initially reported that the child had fallen down a set of stairs and was unresponsive.
Upon arrival, officers quickly discovered that little Zara had trauma injuries inconsistent with a typical fall. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the circumstances immediately raised red flags.
A Grim Discovery
While the initial report suggested an accidental fall, investigators on site noted visible trauma on the child’s body that warranted the involvement of the IMPD’s Child Abuse Unit. Detectives were called in to examine the scene, interview witnesses, and gather evidence.
During questioning, Zachary Arnold, Zara’s father and the only adult reportedly present at the time of her injuries, spoke with detectives. Following the interview, Arnold was taken into custody on preliminary charges and booked into the Marion County Jail. He now faces potential charges of murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death, pending formal decisions by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
As of Tuesday morning, a court date for Arnold had not been scheduled.
A Heartbreaking Loss
The death of Zara Arnold, described by neighbors as “a sweet little girl with a big smile,” has sent shockwaves through the community. Families living on the typically quiet street said they were horrified to hear the news.
“I didn’t know the family well, but I saw her riding her scooter out front a few times,” one neighbor recalled. “She seemed like a happy kid. This is just devastating.”
As the investigation continues, friends and members of the community have already begun placing stuffed animals and flowers near the home in remembrance of the young girl whose life ended far too soon.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities stress that while an arrest has been made, the investigation is still active and ongoing. Detectives are working to determine a full timeline of events, including Zara’s condition prior to the reported fall and whether there was a history of abuse or neglect within the home.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of Zara’s death, which will be critical in guiding prosecutors as they weigh charges against Arnold.
The IMPD is also urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything related to the incident — or who may have knowledge of the family’s history — to come forward.
“This case is heartbreaking, and our detectives are committed to seeking justice for this child,” said an IMPD spokesperson. “If you have any information that might assist in this case, no matter how small, we ask that you reach out.”

A Call for Vigilance
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to remain vigilant in reporting suspected abuse and neglect. Advocates and child protection experts emphasize the importance of community awareness, stressing that speaking up could save a child’s life.
As Indianapolis mourns the death of young Zara Arnold, city leaders and law enforcement vow to ensure that the truth is uncovered and justice is served.
