In Memory of Kevin Bruder and Shaun Salmon
A Message from the Ogden Jr Mustangs Organization
The Ogden Jr Mustangs organization is heartbroken as we join the Utah hockey community in mourning the tragic and untimely loss of two of its most impactful and beloved figures: Kevin Bruder, Director of the Maverik Center and President of the Utah Grizzlies, and Shaun Salmon, a devoted coach with the Golden Spike and Eagles youth hockey associations and a respected member of the Sr. Mustangs team.
These two men were pillars of the sport in our state, helping to build and sustain not only teams but a culture—one rooted in passion, mentorship, integrity, and love for the game. Their contributions, both visible and behind the scenes, shaped the lives of countless players, coaches, families, and fans. As we grieve this tremendous loss, we also pause to honor and remember the enduring legacy they leave behind.
Kevin Bruder: A Visionary and Leader in Utah Hockey
Kevin Bruder’s name is synonymous with excellence in sports management and hockey development in Utah. As the longtime Director of the Maverik Center, he transformed the venue into more than just an arena—it became a home for hockey fans across the state, a hub for memorable moments, and a proving ground for athletes at every level.
As President of the Utah Grizzlies, Kevin worked tirelessly to grow the game, elevate the fan experience, and support hockey at both the professional and grassroots levels. He believed in the power of sport to bring people together and dedicated his life to ensuring that hockey had a strong and lasting presence in Utah. His vision and leadership helped build a foundation that countless others have benefitted from—and will continue to benefit from for generations.
Kevin was more than just an executive—he was a mentor, a friend, and an ambassador for hockey in every sense. His absence will be deeply felt by everyone who had the honor of working with him or simply enjoying the environment he helped create.
Shaun Salmon: A Beloved Coach, Teammate, and Role Model
Shaun Salmon was the kind of coach every young player dreams of having—passionate, dedicated, encouraging, and full of heart. As a leader within the Golden Spike and Eagles youth hockey associations, Shaun poured his time and energy into helping young athletes grow not only as players but as people.
On the ice, he was a fierce competitor and a respected member of the Sr. Mustangs team—a teammate who led by example and brought intensity, camaraderie, and leadership to every game. Off the ice, he was a tireless advocate for player development and personal growth. He had a rare ability to connect with his players, understanding that hockey is about more than wins and losses—it’s about discipline, character, friendship, and fun.
Shaun’s impact on Utah youth hockey is immeasurable. Many of the players he mentored will carry his teachings with them for the rest of their lives, not just in their hockey careers but in every facet of who they become.
A Legacy That Will Live On
The losses of Kevin Bruder and Shaun Salmon have sent ripples of grief throughout the hockey community—not just in Utah, but far beyond. The Ogden Jr Mustangs organization offers our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, colleagues, and all who knew and loved them.
We honor their memory by continuing the work they cared so deeply about: building strong programs, supporting our players and families, and fostering a love for the game that brings people together. Their influence lives on in every rink, every locker room, every face lit up by the thrill of hockey in Utah.
Standing Together as a Community
As we reflect on this profound loss, let us remember the strength and unity of the hockey community. In the spirit of Kevin and Shaun’s legacy, we encourage everyone—players, coaches, families, and fans—to come together in support, compassion, and gratitude. Attend a game. Coach a kid. Cheer a little louder. Lift each other up, both on and off the ice. That is how we honor these men who gave so much of themselves to this game and this community.
To the Bruder and Salmon families: Please know that you are surrounded by a community that stands with you in this time of mourning. We are grieving with you, we are praying for you, and we are inspired by the lives your loved ones lived.
With Respect and Reverence
The Ogden Jr Mustangs organization will never forget Kevin Bruder and Shaun Salmon. Their contributions were not just significant—they were transformative. Their passion for hockey helped shape what the game looks like in Utah today, and their legacy will guide us as we continue to grow it for tomorrow.
Rest in peace, Kevin and Shaun. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
