In Memoriam: Retired Lt. Dena Nichols – A Dedicated Servant, A Respected Leader, A Life of Purpose

With deep sadness and heartfelt respect, we announce the passing of Retired Lieutenant Dena Nichols, a beloved member of our firefighting family and a cornerstone of the department for nearly two decades. Lt. Nichols passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of courage, commitment, and compassion that will not be forgotten.

Dena began her journey in public service as a volunteer firefighter, stepping into a role that would soon become her life’s calling. In the mid-1990s, she transitioned into a full-time position, marking the beginning of a professional career defined by tireless service, quiet leadership, and unwavering dedication to the community she loved.

For nearly 20 years, Lt. Nichols served her city with dignity, humility, and professionalism. Whether responding to emergency calls, mentoring young recruits, or advocating for the well-being of her fellow firefighters, Dena always led by example. Her presence in the station was one of calm assurance—someone who could be counted on no matter the challenge or crisis.

Her retirement in 2013 was bittersweet. While it marked the end of her formal duties, it did not diminish the bond she shared with her brothers and sisters in the department. She remained a cherished part of the firefighting family—attending events, checking in on old friends, and continuing to inspire those who followed in her footsteps.

Dena was more than just a firefighter. She was a trailblazer, especially as one of the few women in the department during her early years. She carried that mantle with strength and grace, never asking for special recognition, but earning the respect and admiration of everyone around her through her work ethic and selfless spirit.

To her fellow firefighters, Dena was a steady hand, a mentor, and a friend. To the community, she was a protector, a symbol of safety and compassion. To her family, she was a rock, always putting others first, yet never failing to bring warmth, humor, and love into every room she entered.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dena’s family and loved ones as they navigate this profound loss. While no words can ease the grief, we hope they find comfort in knowing the indelible impact she made on so many lives—and that her service will never be forgotten.
