In Memoriam: Lt. Gregory “Mick” Hansen – A Brave Firefighter, Relentless ALS Advocate, and Beloved Watchdog

It is with profound sorrow and deep respect that the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) announces the passing of Lieutenant Gregory “Mick” Hansen, a courageous and devoted firefighter who valiantly fought a long and difficult battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Lt. Hansen passed away surrounded by family and fellow firefighters, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and unyielding advocacy.

Mick was a longtime and cherished member of the Watchdogs, Brooklyn’s Engine 254/Ladder 153, where he earned the respect, admiration, and love of his fellow firefighters and community members alike. His commitment to the job went beyond the firehouse doors; Mick lived his life in service of others—both on the front lines as a first responder and in his later years as a tireless advocate for ALS awareness and research.

Diagnosed with ALS, a terminal neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Mick faced the illness with the same fearlessness and resolve that defined his firefighting career. While ALS gradually robbed him of physical mobility, it never touched the spirit that made him who he was: a leader, a fighter, and a beacon of hope.

A Fighter Beyond the Firehouse

Rather than retreat into silence, Mick leaned into advocacy. He became a founding voice in the ALS Watchdogs, a collective of firefighters dedicated to raising funds for ALS research, improving care for patients, and pushing for advancements in treatment. Mick’s voice—clear, urgent, and filled with conviction—drew attention to the harsh realities of ALS and the pressing need for increased research, better resources, and compassionate care.

He worked closely with medical professionals, researchers, and fellow patients, not only to share his personal journey but to explore alternative methods and emerging therapies in hopes of improving the quality of life for himself and others battling the disease. His efforts illuminated both the daily struggles and the untapped possibilities in ALS care.

Through walks, fundraisers, media appearances, and heartfelt storytelling, Mick’s impact rippled far beyond the firehouse and medical community. He became a symbol of resilience, determination, and the unbreakable bond that ties the firefighting family together—even when the uniform can no longer be worn.

A Life of Service and Brotherhood

Lt. Hansen’s dedication to his brothers and sisters in the FDNY never wavered. He embodied the very heart of what it means to be a firefighter: selflessness, loyalty, courage, and compassion. Whether running into burning buildings or facing a terminal illness, Mick never turned away from the hard fight.

He inspired everyone who knew him—colleagues, friends, and even strangers—by showing that even in the face of the most daunting adversity, one can still live a life of purpose, hope, and dignity.

A Legacy That Lives On

As the fire service community mourns the loss of Lt. Gregory Hansen, the UFA reaffirms its commitment to continuing his mission. We will honor Mick by supporting the ALS Watchdogs and pushing forward with advocacy, research funding, and outreach to families affected by ALS. Mick’s fight does not end with his passing—it carries on through every voice he inspired, every dollar raised, and every life made better by his relentless pursuit of change.

To his family, we extend our deepest condolences and unwavering support. We recognize the sacrifices you made alongside Mick, the strength you showed in his most vulnerable moments, and the love that surrounded him always. You are part of this firefighting family forever.

Lt. Gregory “Mick” Hansen may have laid down his tools for the final time, but his spirit—bold, compassionate, and fearless—will continue to burn brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.

— With love and respect,

The Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA)
