In Memoriam: Honoring the Life and Legacy of Terry Wilson, NAVHDA’s Vice President

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Terry Wilson, Vice President of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA), on May 11th, 2024. Terry’s death marks a profound loss not only for our organization but for the broader hunting and conservation communities that he supported and helped to grow throughout his life. His unwavering dedication, integrity, and passion for our mission left an indelible mark on NAVHDA, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.

Terry was more than just a leader in our organization—he was a true champion of NAVHDA’s mission. His contributions spanned across multiple roles, from his work as a judge and financial committee member to his tireless advocacy for the future of our sport, our dogs, and the environments we hold dear. Whether in the field or behind the scenes, Terry’s impact was profound and far-reaching.

A Lifelong Commitment to NAVHDA

Terry’s journey with NAVHDA began in 2006, and over the course of his 18 years with the organization, he became a Life Member, dedicated to the preservation of versatile hunting dogs, the conservation of wildlife, and the education of future handlers. His dedication to these goals was evident in every role he undertook, from being a judge to serving on the Finance Committee and eventually rising to the position of Vice President. His work in these areas helped shape the path for future generations of hunters, dog trainers, and conservationists.

As Vice President, Terry’s leadership was instrumental in driving NAVHDA forward. He played a critical role in the development of partnerships with organizations like the Sportsmen’s Alliance and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation. Through these relationships, he helped raise awareness of key legislative issues impacting dog training, hunting, and conservation efforts at both local and national levels. Terry’s ability to navigate these complex landscapes with grace and determination ensured that NAVHDA was a strong voice for hunters and handlers alike.

Championing the Next Generation: Youth Programs and Track 2 Wing

Terry’s legacy is also deeply connected to the youth programs within NAVHDA. He was fundamental to the development of initiatives designed to support and inspire the next generation of handlers and conservationists. Terry was particularly passionate about ensuring that young people were given the resources, guidance, and opportunities to thrive in the world of hunting and dog training. His vision for the future of the organization was one that was not only grounded in tradition but also forward-looking, preparing the youth to carry the torch with the same integrity and passion that he demonstrated throughout his life.

Together with his wife, Nancy Anisfield, Terry co-founded the Track 2 Wing program, an initiative designed to provide track chairs for upland and waterfowl hunters with mobility challenges. This program was a testament to Terry’s compassionate nature and his desire to make hunting accessible to all, regardless of physical ability. Through his efforts, countless individuals were able to continue enjoying the outdoors and their beloved hunting activities, making memories that will last a lifetime.

A Legacy of Service and Advocacy

In addition to his work with NAVHDA, Terry also served on the board of the Ruffed Grouse Society, reflecting his lifelong dedication to conservation and upland hunting. His advocacy extended beyond the confines of any one organization—he was a respected figure in the broader community of hunters and conservationists who valued the connection between sustainable hunting practices and the preservation of natural habitats.

His work with the Ugly Dog Hunting company, which he founded, also played a key role in supporting NAVHDA and the hunting community at large. The company’s continued sponsorship of NAVHDA underscored Terry’s deep commitment to the dog training and hunting community. Through Ugly Dog Hunting, Terry helped bridge the gap between high-quality products and the people who depend on them, ensuring that hunters had access to the best gear to help them in the field.

A Thoughtful and Respected Leader

Terry was a fair and thoughtful judge, known for his consistency, calm demeanor, and wisdom. He carried a quiet authority that was respected by all who worked with him. He had an innate ability to lead by example, whether in the field, at meetings, or behind the scenes. Terry was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer advice, or step in to support his colleagues whenever needed.

As a leader, Terry’s decisions were guided by a sense of responsibility and a genuine care for the well-being of the people and animals involved in NAVHDA. He understood that the future of the organization depended not just on its programs, but on the people who made them successful—members, volunteers, judges, and handlers. Terry was dedicated to fostering a sense of community and collaboration among everyone involved with NAVHDA, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the organization remained focused on its core mission of promoting versatile hunting dogs and responsible wildlife conservation.

A Lasting Impact

Terry’s passing leaves a void that will be felt deeply within the NAVHDA community. His vision, generosity, and dedication were integral to the success and growth of the organization. He helped build a strong foundation for NAVHDA, ensuring that it would continue to thrive and evolve for future generations. His efforts to strengthen its infrastructure, inspire youth, and advocate for conservation will continue to shape the future of the organization for years to come.

While Terry’s absence is profoundly felt, his legacy lives on through the work that we carry forward. The programs he helped build, the relationships he fostered, and the principles he upheld will guide NAVHDA as we continue to support hunters, handlers, and conservationists across North America.

Terry’s quiet leadership, his dedication to service, and his genuine care for others will be remembered always. His influence will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to work alongside him and those who will come after. His work helped ensure that NAVHDA will remain a strong and vibrant organization, committed to its mission of promoting the versatile hunting dog, advocating for conservation, and supporting hunters and handlers for generations to come.
