In Loving Memory: Rabbi Larry Karol, Beloved Teacher, Musician, and “Rabbi’s Rabbi”
It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Rabbi Larry Karol, a cherished member of the NewCAJE community and a deeply respected figure in Jewish life and education. Rabbi Karol passed away while living in Kansas with his beloved wife Rhonda, surrounded by the love of his family and community. His presence, warmth, and wisdom have left an indelible mark on countless lives across generations.
Rabbi Karol was more than a rabbi—he was a spiritual leader, a gifted musician, a passionate teacher, and a cherished friend. For years, he was a regular presence at NewCAJE, where he brought his deep knowledge of Torah and his soulful melodies to countless gatherings. He had a unique ability to bring people together, weaving music, storytelling, and prayer into moments of true connection and spiritual elevation.
Perhaps nowhere was this more evident than at the beloved Kumsitz gatherings, where Rabbi Karol would sit, guitar in hand, and lead the room in song. His voice—gentle but strong, full of heart—became a familiar and comforting sound. During the isolating days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when so many felt disconnected, Rabbi Karol continued to lead the Kumsitz virtually, alongside Josh Cohen. He brought comfort and a sense of continuity when it was most needed, reminding the community that music and faith could still bring people together, even from afar.
He was a “rabbi’s rabbi,” a mentor and guide not only to congregants but to fellow clergy. His humility, wisdom, and generosity of spirit made him a source of counsel and comfort to many colleagues navigating the complexities of communal leadership. Whether through his sermons, his music, or a simple, heartfelt conversation, Rabbi Karol had a way of helping others find light, even in challenging times.
Rabbi Karol’s spiritual leadership spanned decades, marked by a lifelong commitment to inclusivity, learning, and kindness. He held positions in congregations across the country, offering his gifts wherever he went. But no matter where he served, his core message remained consistent: faith, music, and love of community can transform lives.
He shared that vision not only through his rabbinical work but through original Jewish music that touched hearts far and wide. His compositions—rooted in tradition yet full of contemporary relevance—were sung at synagogues, camps, and conferences across the nation. To hear one of his songs was to experience both joy and depth, a combination that reflected the very soul of who he was.
Rabbi Karol was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His love for his wife Rhonda was evident to all who knew them. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and service. Our hearts go out to Rhonda and their children during this time of mourning. The depth of their loss is shared by all who knew and loved Rabbi Karol.
As we remember his life, we also honor his legacy—a legacy that lives on in the songs he wrote, the students he taught, the communities he served, and the countless individuals he inspired.
May Rabbi Larry Karol’s memory be for a blessing. May his melodies continue to echo in our hearts, his teachings guide our paths, and his love for the Jewish people and for humanity inspire us to lead with compassion and purpose. In his own quiet, powerful way, he changed the world—and we are all better for having known him.
Zichrono livracha — may his memory forever be a blessing.
