In Loving Memory of Sweetjug Ealey

The Portsmouth community is deeply mourning the tragic loss of Sweetjug Ealey, a life taken far too soon on the night of November 1st. Around 11:22 p.m., officers were called to the 4500 block of George Washington Highway after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Sadly, Sweetjug did not survive. Two others were rushed to local hospitals for emergency care.

Sweetjug was more than just a victim in a headline — he was a son, a friend, a loved one, and a familiar presence whose smile and spirit will never be forgotten. He was known for his heart — big, loyal, and full of genuine love for the people around him. Those who knew him speak of his humor, the way he could make people laugh even on their hardest days, and how he always tried to look out for others. He had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

He was called “Sweetjug” for a reason — the nickname itself carried his energy. A little sweetness, a little strength, a presence that felt real and unforgettable. He lived life honestly, showing up as himself, never trying to be anything but who he was. He leaves behind memories that will echo forever: shared conversations, inside jokes, silent support, and a love that cannot be replaced.

His departure leaves a painful emptiness in the hearts of family, friends, and everyone who crossed paths with him. Another young life gone too soon. Another family forced to face a grief that should never be theirs. Another reminder of how precious life is, and how deeply communities are hurt by violence.

Today and always, we honor Sweetjug.

We remember his smile.

We remember his laughter.

We remember his dreams, his love, his presence.

We speak his name so it continues to live.

We hold his memory close so it never fades.

To his family, may you find strength in love.

To his friends, may you find comfort in shared memories.

To the community, may you continue to stand together in healing and unity.

Rest in Peace, Sweetjug Ealey.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten. 🕊️🤍
