In Loving Memory of Richard “Dick” Eastland — A Life of Service, Sacrifice, and Unshakable Devotion

The Camp Mystic community, and indeed all who had the privilege of knowing him, are mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of Richard “Dick” Eastland, a man whose life was defined by unwavering service, gentle leadership, and selfless love. Dick, the beloved co-owner and director of Camp Mystic in the Texas Hill Country, died a hero—giving everything, including his life, in an attempt to save campers during a devastating flash flood in the early hours of July 4, 2025.

For over 50 years, Dick Eastland was the steady heart and soul of Camp Mystic, which he and his wife Tweety lovingly directed since 1974. Generations of young women came to know the joy, growth, and sisterhood that blossomed under their care. But what made Camp Mystic truly special wasn’t just its traditions, songs, or the serenity of the Guadalupe River—it was Dick. With his signature cowboy hat and steady voice, he was a fixture of comfort, wisdom, and trust for thousands of campers and counselors alike.

Dick was more than a camp director. To many, he was a father figure, mentor, and protector. His days were spent walking the campgrounds with quiet vigilance, ensuring each girl felt seen, safe, and cherished. Whether it was offering a word of encouragement to a homesick camper, a warm smile during flag-raising, or guiding spiritual moments at Vespers, Dick gave himself wholly to the children entrusted to his care. His presence grounded Camp Mystic in a deep sense of purpose and belonging.

On that tragic night, when sudden and intense floodwaters swept into the campgrounds, Dick did what he had always done—he put others first. As chaos unfolded, he raced to help the girls, refusing to stand by while danger threatened their lives. In his final moments, Dick was doing exactly what he had done for decades: protecting the lives of children. His body was later found downstream, a heartbreaking end to a life defined by courage and compassion.

His death has left an unspeakable void—not just in the Mystic family, but across the wider community of parents, alumni, staff, and friends who have been shaped by his leadership. Social media and message boards have flooded with remembrances from former campers now grown, calling him a second father, a role model, a quiet hero. Many credit Dick with helping them find confidence, faith, and lifelong friendships. His legacy is not measured in titles or achievements, but in the countless lives he impacted with steady love, fierce protection, and servant-hearted leadership.

To Tweety, their family, and all who called Camp Mystic home: we are with you in this profound sorrow. We remember Dick not just for how he died, but for how he lived—with grace, humility, faith, and a deep, abiding love for every soul who passed through the gates of Mystic.

As the sun sets on the river he walked so many years, may we all carry forward the lessons Dick Eastland taught us: to be brave in the face of fear, to lead with kindness, and to love fiercely those in our care.

Rest in peace, Dick. You gave your life in the purest form of service. You are a hero. You are deeply missed. And you will never, ever be forgotten.
