In Loving Memory of Mark Barnes ’01

It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that we share the passing of Mark Barnes ’01, a beloved alumnus of Lycoming College and an unforgettable presence both on and off the lacrosse field. Mark’s life and legacy continue to inspire, leaving an indelible mark on the Lycoming community, his family, and the sport he helped elevate.

Mark’s journey at Lycoming began in 1997, shortly after Coach Gene Peluso led the men’s lacrosse team through its first season as a varsity program. From the start, it was clear that Mark was more than just a player—he was a catalyst, a difference-maker, and a leader. By his sophomore season, he had already propelled the program to its first MAC Championship final, setting the tone for years of success to follow.

An Extraordinary Lacrosse Career

Mark’s contributions on the field were nothing short of remarkable. As a longstick midfielder, he redefined expectations for the position, combining grit, athleticism, and an uncanny ability to spark momentum for his team. His statistics speak volumes:

  • 733 career faceoff wins — a record that still stands.

  • An average of 10 groundballs per game — another record that endures.

  • 47 goals and 38 assists — astonishing numbers for a defensive-minded position.

Mark’s skill and tenacity earned him recognition as a three-time All-American and a three-time team captain. Under his leadership, the program compiled a 38-22 record (.633), finishing in the top two league spots for his final three years. His peers knew that he was the heartbeat of the team — when Mark played with fire, the entire squad followed suit.

In 2000, Mark was named MAC Player of the Year, a rare and remarkable honor for a longstick midfielder. His legacy was further cemented with induction into the Corning East Hall of Fame, the Lycoming College Hall of Fame, and in 2021, the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame — becoming only the second lacrosse player to receive that distinction.

Coach Peluso once reflected, “His teammates loved him. They knew who the alpha dog was. We had some guys on offense who could score, but there was no doubt who our leader was. How he went, we went.”

A Legacy Beyond the Field

While Mark’s athletic accomplishments were extraordinary, his true greatness was reflected in the bonds he formed and the lives he touched. He was a teammate who inspired respect, a leader who elevated everyone around him, and a friend whose loyalty never wavered. To his family, he was a devoted father, brother, and loved one — the center of their lives and a source of endless pride.

Mark’s sudden passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory lives on through the countless stories, achievements, and relationships he leaves behind. His spirit continues to guide the Lycoming lacrosse program, reminding all who wear the jersey of what it means to play with heart, determination, and love for the game.

Forever in Our Hearts

Our hearts are with his children, Jacob, Justin, and Kallie, along with all of Mark’s family and friends who are grieving this unimaginable loss. Mark Barnes was one-of-a-kind — a record-setting athlete, a loyal leader, and most importantly, a man whose life enriched the lives of so many others.

Though he is gone too soon, his legacy will echo through the halls of Lycoming College, on the lacrosse field, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His mark is everlasting.

Rest in peace, Mark. Your memory will live on forever in the Lycoming family.
