The Helena community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 47-year-old Larry James, a well-known local businessman and the owner of James Paving, whose life was tragically cut short after he went missing earlier this week on the Black Warrior River. His passing marks a profound and painful moment for family, friends, and all who knew him—not only as a skilled professional but as a warm, generous soul who left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered.
Larry was first reported missing on Monday, a discovery made when his boat was found abandoned along the riverbank south of the Lock 8 Boat Landing. Although the landing sits in Hale County, the vessel was found across the water in Greene County, raising immediate concern that something had gone terribly wrong. What followed was an extensive, multi-agency search effort driven by urgency, expertise, and a deeply shared hope that Larry would be found safe.
ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division and Aviation Unit mobilized immediately, coordinating a wide-reaching effort that brought together numerous law enforcement and emergency response teams. They searched tirelessly across rugged terrain and challenging river conditions. Supporting agencies included Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, the Tuscaloosa County Fire and Rescue Dive Team, Hale County EMA, the Hale County Sheriff’s Office, and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team. Their work was complemented by the heartfelt involvement of private citizens—neighbors, friends, and local residents—who offered their time, equipment, and unwavering determination to bring Larry home.
Their efforts came to a solemn conclusion on Friday at 12:06 p.m., when Larry’s body was recovered approximately three miles south of the Lock 8 boat launch, not far from the original search area. While the news brought a sense of closure, it also deepened the grief felt across the community.
Larry James was known for his strong work ethic, his honesty, and the pride he took in running James Paving—yet those who loved him will tell you his true legacy lies in his kindness.
