In Loving Memory of Joe Lazar — City of Westlake Crossing Guard
It is with profound sadness that the City of Westlake community mourns the passing of Joe Lazar, a dedicated and beloved school crossing guard who tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle on September 11, 2025, while faithfully performing his duties at the intersection of Hilliard and Dover Center. Joe’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his colleagues, the families he protected daily, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Joe began serving as a City of Westlake Crossing Guard in December 2019, and from his very first day, he embodied what it meant to serve with pride, patience, and heart. Every morning and afternoon, rain or shine, he stood watch to ensure the safety of children and families crossing the busy streets — a simple act that carried immense importance. His unwavering dedication reflected his genuine care for others and his desire to give back to his community in a meaningful way.
Described by those who worked alongside him as kind, dependable, and deeply caring, Joe was more than just a crossing guard — he was a familiar and friendly face that greeted students, parents, and neighbors each day. His gentle smile and cheerful demeanor brought comfort to children heading to school and reassurance to parents who trusted him to watch over their loved ones.
Joe was also a regular visitor at the Westlake Police Department, where he was warmly regarded by officers and staff. Before and after his shifts, he often stopped by to share a story, a laugh, or simply enjoy a moment of camaraderie with those he considered friends. The Westlake Police Department shared their heartfelt condolences, remembering Joe as a good man who took great pride in serving his community. His presence at the station will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The tragic accident that claimed Joe’s life is currently under investigation, with the City of Westlake Law Department reviewing the case for possible charges against the driver involved. Thankfully, no other individuals were injured in the incident.
As the community grieves, residents have come together to honor Joe’s memory — reflecting on his years of service, his kindness, and the quiet but powerful difference he made in so many lives. The intersection where he stood faithfully each day now stands as a solemn reminder of his dedication and sacrifice.
Joe Lazar’s legacy is one of service, humility, and love for community. He will forever be remembered as a man who found purpose in protecting others, who greeted each day with integrity, and who left behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
To Joe’s family, friends, and colleagues — may you find comfort in knowing that his service and spirit will never be forgotten. The children and families he protected will carry his memory forward with gratitude and respect.
