In Loving Memory of Firefighter Trace Conover
Faithful Servant, Brother in the Fire Service, and Beloved Member of the Community
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the off-duty passing of Firefighter Trace Conover on July 9, 2025. Trace’s unexpected loss has sent waves of grief through the Champaign Fire Department, and through the many lives he touched with his compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication.
Trace honorably served the City of Champaign and its residents for more than three and a half years, answering calls with courage, responding to emergencies with steady resolve, and living out the mission of service every time he stepped into uniform. His impact extended far beyond his daily duties—he embodied the spirit of the fire service: selfless, dependable, and always there when it mattered most.
Trace was more than a firefighter—he was a leader, a friend, and a trusted confidant. His commitment to supporting his fellow brothers and sisters in the fire service was unwavering. He served on the Board of the Champaign Firefighters Benevolent Fund, an organization whose mission is to honor fallen heroes, support local causes, and care for firefighters and their families in times of need. Trace believed deeply in this mission, always finding ways to give back to the department and community he loved.
In recent months, Trace also joined the CFD Peer Support Team, taking an active role in helping others navigate the mental and emotional challenges that come with the demands of the fire service. It takes a special kind of strength to care for others in their quietest moments of pain, and Trace offered that strength freely and without hesitation. His presence in that role was already deeply felt—and now, deeply missed.
As we mourn this heartbreaking loss, we remember Trace not only for what he did but for who he was. He was kind, humble, generous, and sincere. He had a quiet strength that others leaned on, a dependable spirit that made people feel safe, and a heart that radiated care and commitment to both his work and his loved ones.
“He didn’t wear the badge to be a hero. He wore it to serve, to protect, and to make a difference. And that’s exactly what he did—day in and day out.”
Trace leaves behind a grieving fire family, colleagues, and friends, as well as a family who loved him beyond measure. To them, we offer our deepest sympathy, prayers, and unwavering support. Your loss is our loss, and we stand beside you in sorrow and remembrance.
Plans to honor and celebrate Trace’s life will be shared by the department as they become available. In the meantime, we ask the public and fire service community to join us in holding his family in your hearts and prayers.
Though Trace’s watch has ended, his legacy of service, strength, and love for others lives on. We will carry his memory in every act of service, every call we answer, and every life we protect.
Rest in peace, Firefighter Trace Conover.
You gave your heart to this calling, and your impact will never be forgotten.
