In Loving Memory of Ed Weigl: Dedicated Public Servant, Leader, and Friend

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Ed Weigl, our esteemed Treasurer and a cornerstone of our firefighting and public safety community. Ed’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Eastern North Carolina, where his decades of dedicated service, selflessness, and leadership left a lasting legacy on countless lives and organizations.

For many years, Ed served with distinction as the Treasurer of the Craven County Fireman’s Association, where he played an integral role in ensuring the strength and integrity of our operations. His unwavering commitment and quiet diligence helped guide the organization through years of growth and change, always with the community’s best interests at heart.

Beyond his work with the Fireman’s Association, Ed remained deeply active in his service with No. 7 Township Fire-Rescue, where he continued to hold the position of Treasurer. His commitment to this department extended far beyond finances — Ed was a Past Chief and officer, leading with wisdom, courage, and a tireless drive to protect and serve. Under his leadership, No. 7 Township Fire-Rescue became a model of integrity, dedication, and teamwork.

Ed’s contributions extended beyond local borders. He held many respected roles with the Eastern Carolina Firefighters Association, serving as Director, and was a representative voice within the North Carolina State Fireman’s Association, where he worked to strengthen fire service operations statewide. His efforts in advocacy, coordination, and mentorship have left a permanent impact on the regional firefighting landscape.

Before dedicating himself to fire and rescue services, Ed served honorably with the United States Coast Guard, where he developed the sense of discipline and service that would guide his entire life. He later continued his public safety career with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, from which he eventually retired after years of dedicated law enforcement service. Whether on land or sea, Ed was a steadfast protector of others.

Those who had the privilege to know Ed remember him not only for his impressive resume but for his genuine kindness, humble leadership, and unwavering commitment to his fellow firefighters and community members. He was a mentor, a confidant, and a friend to many — always ready to step in, solve a problem, or offer his support without hesitation or recognition.

As we mourn his passing, we also honor the immense legacy he leaves behind. His contributions have touched nearly every facet of emergency services in our region and have inspired generations of public servants to lead with integrity and compassion.

We ask that you please keep Ed’s family, his No. 7 Township Fire-Rescue family, and all his colleagues throughout Craven County and the state in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. The void he leaves is immeasurable, but the light he brought to our lives will continue to shine.

Rest in peace, Ed Weigl. Your service, leadership, and friendship will never be forgotten. Thank you for a lifetime of commitment to others — you were truly one of a kind.
