In Loving Memory of Derrien Scott — Remembering a Bright Life Gone Too Soon

The small, close-knit community of Maringouin, Louisiana, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Derrien Scott, who was tragically killed in a shooting on Thursday evening. The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the shooting occurred at the Ridgewood Apartments around 6:12 p.m., leaving Derrien dead and another young man, a 19-year-old, injured.

Authorities say both victims were from the Maringouin area. The incident has left family, friends, classmates, and neighbors reeling in shock — another young life lost to senseless violence, leaving behind a void that words can scarcely fill.

Derrien Scott was a student in the Iberville Parish School District, known by his peers and teachers as a bright, kind, and motivated young man. He carried a contagious smile, a respectful demeanor, and a genuine heart that drew people toward him. Those who knew Derrien remember him as someone who always tried to make others laugh, who dreamed big, and who worked hard to turn those dreams into reality.

His teachers described him as a dedicated student with a bright future ahead — someone who had the potential to achieve great things. His friends say he loved sports, music, and spending time with his loved ones, often seen as the person everyone could rely on for a word of encouragement or a moment of laughter.

The tragedy has cast a deep shadow over Maringouin, a community where nearly everyone knows one another. Vigils and memorials are already being organized to honor Derrien’s life, as friends and family gather to remember the joy and warmth he brought to everyone he met.

“Derrien had a good heart,” said a family member. “He was full of life, always smiling, and always respectful. He didn’t deserve this. None of these young people do.”

The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, working to determine what led to the violence that ended Derrien’s young life. Community leaders are once again calling for peace, unity, and stronger efforts to prevent youth violence — urging residents to come together in the face of tragedy, rather than be divided by it.

For Derrien’s family, the pain is immeasurable. Losing a child, a brother, a friend at such a young age is something no one should ever have to endure. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve, surrounded by the love and prayers of those who knew Derrien best.

His passing is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be — and how deeply one young person’s presence can touch a community. Though his life was far too short, Derrien’s legacy will continue to live on through the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

In loving memory of Derrien Scott (2008–2025):

Gone too soon, but never forgotten.

A son, a friend, a student — and a light that will forever shine in the hearts of all who knew him.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
