In Loving Memory of Daronte Herbert Dyer County, Tennessee — November 7, 2025
The Dyer County community continues to carry the weight of a heartbreaking loss as it remembers the life of 18-year-old Daronte Herbert, whose promising future was taken in a senseless act of violence. On November 6, 2025, justice moved one step closer to honoring his memory when a Dyer County jury found Deshawn “Money” Gorman and Demauzay “Zay” Jackson guilty of First Degree Murder for their roles in his tragic death. Immediately following the verdict, Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes imposed a life sentence on both individuals. Under Tennessee law, a life sentence requires that they serve at least 51 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Although nothing can ever fill the void left by Daronte’s absence, the verdict represents a long-awaited and hard-fought acknowledgment of the truth — and a step toward healing for his loved ones.
Daronte was only 18 years old when his life was stolen in April 2018. He was lured to Bean Mill Road under false pretenses by people he believed he could trust. Instead, in a cruel and devastating betrayal, his life was taken. What should have been the beginning of adulthood — a time of growth, exploration, and dreams — was cut short, leaving a permanent ache in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
Those who knew Daronte remember him as a young man full of spirit, kindness, and hope. He had a warm smile that could brighten any room and a personality that made others feel welcomed and seen. Whether laughing with friends, spending time with his loved ones, or simply being himself, Daronte carried a genuine presence that touched every life he encountered. He had aspirations, goals, and a future that was undoubtedly filled with potential.
The pain of losing him has been heavy, but his memory continues to inspire strength. His family has stood with unwavering courage throughout the long journey toward justice — holding on to love, holding on to truth, and holding on to the legacy of who Daronte was.
Sheriff Jeff Box expressed his support for the jury’s decision, acknowledging not only the pursuit of justice but also the deep emotional impact felt throughout the county. He shared, “The jury got it right and this verdict serves as a reminder of our commitment to justice for the victims of violence in our community. The violent murder of Daronte Herbert has left an indelible mark on our community, and we hope that this conviction can bring some closure to his family and friends.”
The case was prosecuted by the 29th District Attorney’s Office under the leadership of District Attorney General Danny Goodman, Jr., whose dedication to ensuring accountability reflects the community’s shared refusal to forget. The investigation, led meticulously by Dyer County Sheriff’s Office Chief Investigator Terry McCreight and his team, was built with care, determination, and a commitment to honoring Daronte’s life.
This moment is not simply about punishment — it is about remembrance.
It is about a young life that mattered.
It is about a family that continues to grieve, yet refuses to let Daronte’s memory fade.
It is about a community choosing unity over silence and justice over fear.
As Dyer County honors Daronte’s memory, may his life be remembered not for the tragedy of his passing, but for the love, laughter, and light he brought into the world. His story will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the community that continues to speak his name with love.
May Daronte Herbert rest in eternal peace.
Gone from this world far too soon, but remembered always.
His memory lives on — today, tomorrow, and forever.
