In Loving Memory of Coach Joe Monmonier
A Legacy of Leadership, Dedication, and Seahawk Spirit

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Coach Joe Monmonier, longtime Athletic Director and treasured member of the Seahawk family. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the life of our school and community—one that was defined by unwavering commitment, deep compassion, and a legacy that will live on for generations.

Coach Monmonier dedicated over two decades of his life to our school, serving first as a Special Education teacher and lacrosse coach, and eventually stepping into the role of Athletic Director, which he held with pride and excellence for the past thirteen years. In every position he held, Joe exemplified what it meant to lead with heart. He wasn’t just an administrator or a coach—he was a pillar of strength, support, and integrity, known and respected by students, athletes, colleagues, and families alike.

Coach Monmonier believed that sports were about much more than competition—they were about character, discipline, teamwork, and resilience. He worked tirelessly to ensure that every student-athlete had the resources, encouragement, and opportunities to grow both on and off the field. His leadership transformed our athletic program into one of pride and excellence, and his vision helped lay the foundation for countless student successes.

To his athletes, Joe was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a motivator, and a lifelong supporter. He believed in his students when they couldn’t yet believe in themselves. He celebrated their victories, stood by them through defeats, and always reminded them of the bigger picture—of becoming good people, not just good players.

To his colleagues, he was a trusted friend, a source of wisdom, and a professional standard-bearer. He inspired other athletic directors across South Carolina and beyond, generously offering guidance and setting an example of how to lead with fairness, humility, and fierce dedication. His reach extended far beyond our campus, shaping not just a school, but a community of educators and athletic leaders.

Coach Monmonier’s loss is deeply felt throughout our entire Seahawk community. He was the heart of our school’s athletic culture, but also so much more: a man of principle, kindness, and courage. Whether you knew him from the sidelines, the office, the classroom, or the community—Joe left a lasting impression. His booming voice, warm smile, and steady leadership will be sorely missed.

We understand that this news is incredibly difficult, especially for our students and staff. To support our community during this time of grief, counselors will be available on campus starting Monday, July 14, and we encourage anyone in need to make use of these resources. If your student needs additional support, please do not hesitate to contact Hilton Head Island High School at 843-689-4800.

In the days ahead, we will share more information regarding services, memorials, and opportunities to honor the life and legacy of Coach Joe Monmonier. We invite all who knew and loved him to come together in remembrance and gratitude for a man who gave so much, so selflessly.

Rest in peace, Coach.
You were the heart of our Seahawk family, and your legacy will forever guide and inspire us. Thank you for everything. 🦅🏅💙
