In Loving Memory of Bryson Burns, 17, of Saluda County, South Carolina
SALUDA, S.C. — A tragic boating accident on Lake Murray has claimed the life of Bryson Burns, a 17-year-old high school student whose vibrant spirit and promising future were heartbreakingly cut short. The Saluda County Coroner’s Office confirmed the young man’s death Tuesday afternoon, following an intensive search operation that ended with the recovery of his body late Monday evening.
According to Coroner Angie Rita, Bryson had been out on the lake navigating a small johnboat when he fell into the water near Ramp 4 off River Bend Point in Saluda County. The sequence of events that led to the fall remains unclear, but deputies with the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly after Bryson’s boat was found drifting, unoccupied.
In the hours that followed, a coordinated search was launched involving the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the SLED Child Fatality Unit. As daylight faded, SCDNR dive teams continued their efforts with determination and urgency. At approximately 8:30 p.m., Bryson’s body was located and recovered from the lake. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy will be performed later this week to determine the exact cause of death, as the investigation continues by multiple agencies, including the Saluda County Coroner’s Office, SCDNR, and SLED.
The devastating news has sent waves of grief throughout Saluda County, as friends, family members, classmates, and neighbors come to terms with the sudden loss of a young man who touched countless lives. Bryson Burns was known for his infectious smile, boundless energy, and generous heart. He was a student, an athlete, a son, a brother, and a friend to many.
Bryson’s love for the outdoors was well known—he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially spending time on the water. Whether casting a line on Lake Murray or exploring the creeks and woods near his home, he found joy and peace in nature. It was where he felt most at home, most alive. The lake that he loved would become the setting of his final day, a reality that only deepens the heartbreak for those left behind.
Family and friends describe Bryson as driven, thoughtful, and mature beyond his years. He was the kind of young man who made others feel welcome and respected. Teachers and coaches recall his respectful demeanor, strong work ethic, and natural leadership qualities. Whether it was helping a younger teammate or volunteering in his community, Bryson left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Above all, Bryson was devoted to his family. His bond with his parents and siblings was unshakable, and his absence will leave a void that can never be filled. His loved ones now face the unimaginable task of saying goodbye to a son and brother taken far too soon, even as they hold on to the countless memories of a life that, while short, was lived with passion, kindness, and purpose.
Plans for a memorial service are currently underway, and the Burns family has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the community during this profoundly difficult time. In honor of Bryson’s life, friends and classmates are organizing candlelight vigils, tributes, and remembrance events to celebrate the legacy of a young man who meant so much to so many.
This tragedy also serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of boating safety, especially for youth and solo riders. As the investigation continues, authorities may revisit safety protocols and offer new guidance to help prevent similar accidents in the future.
For now, Saluda County grieves, holding close the memory of a young soul whose light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Bryson Burns. Your life, though brief, was full of meaning, love, and light. You will be remembered always.
