What began as a call about a “family disorder” ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving 38-year-old Alessandra Amador Merchant dead and a family forever changed.
At around 9:30 p.m., Greensboro Police, Fire, and Guilford County EMS responded to the residence after receiving reports of a disturbance inside the home. Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with gunfire from an armed man later identified as 62-year-old Paul Arthur Merchant. The dangerous situation prompted a shelter-in-place alert for residents in the immediate area, as police worked tirelessly to gain control of an escalating and volatile scene.
A Night of Fear and Chaos
Special teams were activated as negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation from outside the home. During the tense standoff, a juvenile inside the residence was safely released and unharmed, thanks to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement.
