Illinois State University Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Person of Interest in Bone Student Center Shooting

NORMAL, IL — The Illinois State University Police Department (ISUPD) is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest connected to a shots fired incident that occurred on Sunday evening, April 27, 2025, at the Bone Student Center.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., an altercation broke out between two groups inside the Bone Student Center. The situation escalated and ended with a non-student suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

ISUPD confirmed that the incident was isolated and not considered a random act of violence. The person believed responsible for the gunfire fled the scene immediately following the altercation. Surveillance images capturing the individual of interest have been released to the public as police work to track down those involved.

In response to the emergency, ISUPD mobilized all available resources to secure the campus and aid the investigation. The Normal Police Department, Bloomington Police Department, McLean County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Normal Fire Department all responded rapidly to assist. Their swift action ensured the safety of students, faculty, and staff as the situation unfolded.

Overnight, dozens of law enforcement officers worked tirelessly, combing through evidence, following up on leads, and maintaining a strong security presence across campus to reassure the university community.

“We are incredibly grateful for the collaborative efforts of our law enforcement and emergency service partners,” said an ISUPD spokesperson. “Their quick response and professionalism ensured that we could secure the scene and begin a thorough investigation without delay.”

Photos of the person of interest have been made available, and ISUPD is urging anyone who recognizes the individual or who has any information about the incident to come forward. Even seemingly minor details could help piece together the full story and bring those responsible to justice.

Tips and information can be submitted by emailing ISUPolice@IllinoisState.edu or by calling 309-438-8631. Anonymous reports are also welcome.

University officials emphasized that campus safety remains a top priority and reassured students, parents, and staff that additional patrols and security measures have been implemented while the investigation continues.

Illinois State University President Terri Goss Kinzy issued a brief statement Monday morning expressing support for the victim and gratitude to first responders:
“Our thoughts are with the victim and their family during this difficult time. We are proud of the swift and coordinated efforts of our campus and community partners to ensure safety and respond with professionalism and care.”

As the investigation moves forward, ISUPD encourages everyone on campus to stay aware of their surroundings, report suspicious activity, and continue supporting one another.

More updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
