Illinois State Police Continue Investigation Into Tragic Fatal Crash at Chatham After-School Program
CHATHAM, IL — A quiet Monday afternoon turned into a scene of heartbreak and devastation in Chatham as a vehicle plowed into an after-school program facility, killing four and injuring several others. The Illinois State Police (ISP) have confirmed they are actively investigating the fatal crash, which occurred just after 3:20 p.m. on April 28, 2025, at the YNOT After School Camp, located at 301 Breckenridge Road.
According to preliminary reports from ISP, a single vehicle inexplicably left the roadway, crossed a field, and smashed into the east side of the YNOT facility. The vehicle tore through the building, striking multiple children inside, before emerging from the other side. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was not injured in the crash and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. Toxicology tests are pending.
Tragically, four young lives were lost in the crash — two 7-year-old children, an 8-year-old, and an 18-year-old, who was reportedly a staff member at the facility. Six more children sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. As of the latest update, one child remains in critical condition.
The crash has sent shockwaves throughout the Chatham community and the broader Sangamon County area. What was supposed to be a safe and nurturing environment for children after school became the scene of a horrific tragedy, leaving parents, educators, and first responders deeply shaken.
While the full circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, officials have stated that there is no indication at this time that the incident was intentional. The Illinois State Police emphasized that this does not appear to be a targeted attack, though all potential factors are being thoroughly examined.

The collaborative response from local and state authorities highlights the gravity of the event and the need for a comprehensive investigation. In a statement released late Monday evening, the Illinois State Police expressed deep sorrow:
