ICE Shooting in Franklin Park Leaves One Dead, Agent Severely Injured
FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. — A man was fatally shot and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was seriously injured Friday morning during a law enforcement operation in the Chicago suburb of Franklin Park, according to federal authorities.
The Incident
ICE officials stated that the shooting occurred during an enforcement action in the 9800 block of Grand Avenue. Agents conducted a vehicle stop when the man allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to use his vehicle to ram the arresting officers.
In the struggle, ICE said the man drove forward, dragging one of the agents. Fearing for his life and the safety of others, the injured agent discharged his firearm, striking the driver.
Emergency Response
Both the man and the agent were rushed to a nearby hospital. The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The injured agent was stabilized but sustained what ICE described as severe injuries.
Local police assisted in securing the scene as federal agents conducted preliminary investigations. No bystanders were reported injured in the confrontation.
ICE Statement
In a statement, ICE defended the actions of its personnel, emphasizing the dangers faced during enforcement operations.
“Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, the safety of our officers and those being apprehended,” an ICE spokesperson said.
The agency stressed that the incident highlights the risks involved in immigration enforcement and that further details would be released as the investigation develops.
Community Reaction
News of the shooting spread quickly across Franklin Park, a community situated near Chicago’s western border. Some residents expressed shock over the violence unfolding in a busy commercial area, while immigrant rights groups are calling for further transparency regarding ICE operations and the use of lethal force.
Activists have already begun raising concerns over whether non-lethal measures were considered before shots were fired. “We need accountability when deadly force is used, particularly in our neighborhoods,” one community organizer said.
Ongoing Investigation
ICE confirmed that the incident remains under investigation and that the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General has been notified. Standard review procedures will examine whether federal protocols were properly followed during the operation.
Officials have not disclosed why the man was being targeted by ICE or whether additional arrests were made.
