It is with profound sorrow that we share the devastating news of a tragic incident on the Ocmulgee River, where three precious young lives were lost in a heartbreaking drowning on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The Macon community, and all who have heard this tragic news, are mourning together as we come to terms with the unimaginable loss of these innocent souls.
The drowning victims have been identified as:
-
Skyler Worthen, age 10, who was pronounced deceased on the scene by Deputy Coroner Ronnie Miley at 2:58 p.m.
-
Summer McRae, age 7, pronounced deceased at 10:06 a.m.
-
Johnny Collins III, also age 7, pronounced deceased at 10:15 a.m.
This tragedy unfolded at the beloved Amerson Park, a place known for family outings, nature walks, and community gatherings — now the site of an unspeakable loss that has rocked the hearts of families, friends, first responders, and the entire community.
Authorities and emergency crews responded with urgency and determination. Despite every effort from first responders, rescue teams, and medical personnel, these young lives could not be saved. The professionalism, bravery, and compassion shown by those on scene are a testament to their dedication — though the outcome leaves all involved devastated.
Out of respect for the families affected and to allow for a thorough investigation and recovery efforts, Amerson Park was temporarily closed. It will reopen to the public on Thursday morning, though it will forever bear the memory of this tragedy in the hearts of those who frequent its grounds.
The grief felt across the community is overwhelming. Parents have lost their children, siblings have lost their brothers and sisters, and friends have lost their playmates. The loss of young lives, full of promise, laughter, and innocence, is a sorrow too deep for words.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Skyler, Summer, and Johnny — may you find strength in the love and support of your community during this unimaginable time. Words can never erase the pain, but we hope that knowing so many mourn with you will offer some measure of comfort.
As we reflect on this tragedy, let us also remember the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we love. May the memories of these beautiful children live on in the hearts of all who knew them, and may their lives be honored with compassion, care, and unity in our community.
Rest in peace, Skyler Worthen, Summer McRae, and Johnny Collins III.
You are gone far too soon, but never forgotten.
