Heartbreak in South Memphis: Police Seek Suspects After Two MSCS Students Killed in Broad Daylight Shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 26, 2025) — A wave of grief and anger has swept across South Memphis following a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of two Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) students on Thursday afternoon. Memphis Police are urgently searching for multiple suspects in connection with the brazen, daylight attack that unfolded just steps away from Booker T. Washington High School.
A Tragic Scene Near a Place of Learning
The shooting occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Mississippi Boulevard near South Lauderdale Street, a location heartbreakingly close to where students should feel safest. According to Deputy Chief Webb Kirkdoffer, responding officers arrived at the scene to find two young males, both pronounced dead where they fell. While the Memphis Police Department (MPD) has not officially released the ages or identities of the victims, the district has confirmed that both were enrolled students within MSCS.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos in the moments after the gunfire erupted, with students and bystanders running for cover and several nearby businesses locking their doors until the scene was secured.
The Search for Answers and Justice
At this time, no arrests have been made. However, Memphis Police have released photos of three unidentified males believed to be connected to the shooting. Authorities are urgently requesting the public’s assistance in identifying and locating these individuals.
“This is a call for help from our community,” said Deputy Chief Kirkdoffer. “We need the eyes and ears of Memphis to help us find those responsible for this senseless act of violence. These young lives were taken far too soon, and we must act swiftly to bring justice to their families.”
The released images show the three suspects in and around the area shortly before and after the shooting. Officials are hoping that anyone who recognizes them will come forward with tips.

‘Everybody Misses Them’
Across Memphis, grief has been palpable. Students, teachers, and family members have described the victims as kind, energetic, and full of promise. Candlelight vigils are being organized at Booker T. Washington High School and throughout the community to honor the lives lost.
“Everybody misses them,” said one student tearfully. “They didn’t deserve this. They were just kids trying to live their lives.”
School counselors and trauma specialists have been made available to students and faculty at Booker T. Washington High School and surrounding schools, providing support during this devastating time.
MSCS released a statement late Thursday, saying:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two of our students. We offer our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and the entire school community. We are committed to providing emotional support and ensuring the safety of our students and staff.”
An Urgent Call to End the Violence
City leaders and activists have once again sounded the alarm on the urgent need to address gun violence, particularly among youth in Memphis. As the city grapples with the pain of yet another tragedy, many are calling for more community outreach, mental health resources, and meaningful investments in education and safety programs.
“We are tired of burying our children,” said a local pastor during a hastily organized prayer circle. “We must stand together, demand better, and fight for a future where our youth can thrive without fear.”
Ongoing Investigation
As investigators continue to comb through evidence and interview witnesses, the Memphis Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to finding those responsible for the shooting.
MPD officials have reiterated that this is an active and ongoing investigation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, the community is being asked to remain vigilant, stay connected, and support one another during this time of profound grief.
