HARFORD COUNTY, Md. — A devastating multi-vehicle crash involving two passenger vehicles and a Harford County Public School bus left one teenager dead and another seriously injured Thursday afternoon, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

The Collision

Shortly after 2 p.m. on September 18, 2025, deputies from HCSO, along with allied law enforcement agencies, the Harford County Department of Emergency Services, and local fire companies, responded to the area of Route 543 and Crescent Knoll Drive for reports of a serious vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, first responders found two heavily damaged passenger vehicles and a school bus carrying students. Immediate medical aid was rendered to all involved, and aviation support was requested from the Maryland State Police to airlift the most severely injured victim.

Preliminary Findings

According to an initial investigation by deputies assigned to the HCSO Traffic Unit, the crash occurred when a vehicle traveling northbound on Route 543 stopped properly and was waiting to make a left turn onto Crescent Knoll Drive.

The stationary car was then struck from behind by another vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man, propelling it into the path of a southbound Harford County Public School bus.

  • The driver of the struck vehicle, a 17-year-old male, sustained significant injuries and was airlifted to a local trauma center.

  • The passenger of the vehicle, a 16-year-old female, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

  • The driver of the striking vehicle was not injured.

Impact on the School Bus

The school bus, which was carrying students at the time, remained at the scene. HCSO confirmed that all non-injured students were evacuated and transferred to another bus for safety. Out of precaution, six students were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. None of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Community Response

The Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the families affected, acknowledging the devastating loss of the teenage passenger and the serious injuries sustained by her peer.

“This is a tragic day for our community,” the agency said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of everyone involved in today’s collision, especially those who lost a loved one.”

Ongoing Investigation

The crash remains under investigation as HCSO traffic deputies work to determine contributing factors such as speed, driver distraction, or impairment. All vehicles involved have been secured for further inspection.

Authorities emphasized that updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
