Four People Shot in Mass Shooting Outside Citgo at Harrison and Homan; Police Searching for Suspect in Dark SUV
CHICAGO, IL — A Friday night in Chicago’s West Side turned violent when gunfire erupted near the intersection of Harrison Street and Homan Avenue, leaving four men injured, including two in critical condition. The shooting occurred around 9:06 p.m. on May 16, 2025, in the 600 block of S. Homan Avenue, within the city’s 11th Police District. What was initially called in as a gunfight quickly escalated into a full-scale response involving multiple ambulance units and critical trauma care.
According to police and Crime Scene updates, the victims were reportedly standing outside near the Citgo gas station when a dark-colored SUV, believed to be a black Mercedes, approached. Without warning, an unknown assailant or assailants opened fire from within the vehicle, spraying bullets into the group before fleeing the scene at high speed. The shooter(s) remain at large, and Area Four Detectives are actively investigating.
Victims and Injuries:
Police confirmed that four individuals were struck by gunfire. First responders arrived swiftly, with police officers rendering life-saving aid at the scene — including applying a tourniquet at 9:08 p.m. and a chest seal at 9:09 p.m., critical interventions that may have helped stabilize the most seriously wounded.
The victims and their conditions are as follows:
- 16-year-old male – Sustained gunshot wounds to the left leg; transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
- 26-year-old male – Suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen; taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, also in critical condition.
- 23-year-old male – Shot in the ankle; transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, listed in good condition.
- 24-year-old male – Hit in the right leg and buttocks; taken to Stroger Hospital, currently in critical condition.
One of the victims reportedly walked into Mt. Sinai Hospital on their own, initially complicating the count of those wounded in the mass shooting.
Emergency Response:
The chaotic scene prompted a multi-agency response, with at least three ambulances — Ambo 33, 77, and 65 — transporting victims under “Red” (critical) and “Yellow” (serious but stable) conditions. Triage operations were coordinated at the scene, and police worked to secure the area amid heavy foot and vehicle traffic.
Officers continued to canvas the neighborhood late into the night, searching for surveillance footage and witnesses. At this time, no arrests have been made, and police are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the vehicle involved — described as a black Mercedes SUV — to come forward.
Investigation Ongoing:
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or random, and whether it may be related to ongoing conflicts or retaliatory violence in the area. The intersection of Harrison and Homan has seen past incidents of violence, making this latest event particularly concerning for residents.
Community Reaction and Appeal for Help:
Local residents expressed shock and frustration over the continued gun violence affecting their neighborhoods. The proximity of the shooting to a busy gas station and residential area has only heightened calls for more community engagement and proactive policing.
