Fort Stewart Shooting: Sgt. Quornelius Radford Identified as Gunman in Attack That Injured Five Soldiers

FORT STEWART, Ga. — August 6, 2025 — A sense of shock and sorrow has gripped Fort Stewart and surrounding communities following a violent active shooter incident on Wednesday that left five soldiers injured and the base temporarily locked down. Authorities have confirmed that the individual responsible for the shooting was Sergeant Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old soldier assigned to the installation.

The incident took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2nd ABCT) area of the U.S. Army’s sprawling southeastern Georgia base, one of the largest military installations in the country. The events unfolded rapidly, triggering base-wide alerts and an immediate law enforcement and medical response that ultimately prevented further tragedy.

The Incident Unfolds

According to initial reports from military and local law enforcement officials, the shooting began at approximately 8:45 a.m., when Sgt. Radford, for reasons still under investigation, opened fire on fellow soldiers during what is believed to have been a routine gathering or meeting.

The sudden violence sent shockwaves across the base as emergency sirens sounded and personnel scrambled to secure buildings and shelter in place. Response teams from both Fort Stewart Military Police and the Department of Emergency Services quickly arrived on scene and apprehended Radford after a brief standoff. No shots were fired during the arrest.

Casualties and Current Condition

Five soldiers sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. As of this writing, all are receiving treatment at Winn Army Community Hospital and other nearby medical facilities. Authorities have stated that while some of the injuries are serious, all five victims are currently in stable condition, and none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Military families and loved ones were notified promptly, and support services, including counseling and spiritual care, are being provided to affected units and families.

Investigation Underway

The motive behind Sgt. Radford’s actions remains unclear. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) agents, along with the FBI and other federal and military investigators, are actively working to piece together the sequence of events that led up to the shooting. Officials have confirmed that Radford acted alone and that no further threats remain at Fort Stewart.

Radford, now in custody, is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment, among others. Pending further investigation, he may also face court-martial and additional charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Community and Military Response

The incident has deeply impacted the Fort Stewart community, which is known for its close-knit military families and history of service. Army officials held a press briefing late Wednesday afternoon, expressing their commitment to transparency, healing, and justice.

Major General Curtis Simons, commanding officer of the 3rd Infantry Division, called the incident “a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing act that shakes the foundation of trust within our ranks.”

“Our priority right now is the well-being of the injured soldiers and the mental health of their comrades and families,” he added. “This is a time for unity, for compassion, and for resilience.”

Chaplains and behavioral health teams have been deployed throughout the base to assist soldiers and families affected by the tragedy. The Fort Stewart community is also being offered grief counseling and mental health resources to help process the traumatic event.

A Tragic Reminder

Wednesday’s shooting serves as a somber reminder of the complex challenges many service members face—including mental health struggles, stress, and the toll of military life. Leaders across the Department of Defense have emphasized the importance of vigilance, empathy, and support systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Military leaders have assured the public that there will be a thorough review of protocols and safeguards to better ensure the safety of personnel on base. Security measures have since been reinforced, and non-essential activities remain suspended pending further updates.

Looking Ahead

As Fort Stewart begins the long process of healing, thoughts and prayers continue to pour in from across the state of Georgia and the nation. Messages of support have been shared by military families, veterans’ organizations, and elected officials, offering solidarity in the face of this painful chapter.

More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues. In the meantime, the focus remains on supporting the wounded, caring for the community, and honoring the resilience of those who wear the uniform.
