Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash in Burlington Claims One Life, Leaves Passenger Seriously Injured

Burlington, KY – The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has released details regarding a tragic single-vehicle collision that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, September 26, 2025. The crash, which took place at approximately 4:01 a.m., happened at the intersection of East Bend Road (KY 338) and Possum Path Road in Burlington, Kentucky. Authorities have confirmed the incident resulted in one fatality and left a passenger with potentially life-threatening injuries.

According to investigators, the vehicle involved was a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Matthew Combs, 48, of Burlington, KY. Combs was traveling westbound on East Bend Road near Possum Path when he failed to properly negotiate a right-hand curve. The car crossed into the opposing lane before exiting the roadway on the left side. After leaving the pavement, the vehicle continued downhill, colliding with a utility pole and overturning onto its right side. The Ford Focus ultimately came to rest blocking both lanes of the roadway.

Emergency Response
First responders, including Burlington Fire/EMS, arrived swiftly on the scene. Tragically, driver Matthew Combs was pronounced deceased at the crash site. The passenger, identified as Stephanie Schulze, 44, also of Burlington, KY, sustained serious injuries. She was extricated from the wreckage by emergency personnel and transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Officials described her condition as critical, with injuries believed to be life-threatening.

Ongoing Investigation
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently handling the investigation. Authorities have stated that alcohol and drug impairment have not yet been ruled out as contributing factors. Investigators also noted that Combs was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor often associated with increased risk of fatal injury. Schulze’s seatbelt usage is still under review.

At this time, no criminal charges are being considered, as the incident is classified as a tragic loss rather than a criminal event. The sheriff’s office emphasized that accident reconstruction efforts are vital to fully understanding the sequence of events and identifying all possible contributing factors, including road conditions, driver impairment, and mechanical issues.

Aftermath
The roadway was closed for several hours following the collision to allow emergency crews and investigators to work safely. It was reopened to traffic at approximately 6:45 a.m. after the scene was cleared and deemed safe for motorists.

Community Impact
The loss of Matthew Combs has left the Burlington community mourning, while concern remains high for the recovery of Stephanie Schulze. Friends, family, and neighbors have been urged to keep both families in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

Authorities continue to encourage drivers to exercise caution, especially during early morning hours when visibility and alertness can be diminished. Proper seatbelt use, adherence to speed limits, and avoidance of impaired driving remain critical safety measures emphasized by law enforcement.
