Fatal Crash on I-44 Near Miami Claims Life of OTA Worker, Another Hospitalized in Critical Condition
Miami, Oklahoma — Authorities are investigating a devastating crash on Interstate 44 near Miami that left one Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) worker dead and another critically injured after a tractor-trailer veered off the roadway early Monday.
The Crash
According to initial reports, the crash occurred when a tractor-trailer left the roadway along I-44 and collided with an OTA service vehicle parked on the shoulder. At the time of the impact, one OTA worker was outside the vehicle performing duties on foot, while another remained inside the service truck.
The collision proved fatal for the OTA worker on foot, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second worker, who was inside the service vehicle, was rushed to a hospital in Joplin, Missouri, and remains in critical condition.
Response and Investigation
Emergency crews, including Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), local first responders, and OTA supervisors, quickly responded to the scene. Traffic along I-44 was slowed significantly as authorities closed off portions of the interstate to conduct rescue efforts, secure the scene, and begin a preliminary crash investigation.
