Fatal Crash on I-240 in West Asheville Claims Life of Local Man, Investigation Ongoing

ASHEVILLE, NC — A tragic collision on Interstate 240 in West Asheville on the evening of June 7, 2025, has claimed the life of Zacharia Robert Cosgrove, 41, of Asheville, according to a statement released by the Asheville Police Department.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred when Cosgrove, driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, attempted to change lanes while heading westbound on I-240. During the maneuver, his Jeep collided with a 1984 Pontiac Firebird, causing the Jeep to roll over violently and strike a 2018 Ford F-150 traveling in the same direction. The sudden and forceful impact resulted in Cosgrove being ejected from his vehicle.

Emergency personnel responded quickly and transported Cosgrove to Mission Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tragically, despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital shortly after his arrival. According to the official accident report, Cosgrove was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash—a decision that may have significantly impacted the outcome.

A passenger in the Jeep also sustained injuries during the collision but is expected to recover after being treated for minor injuries at the same hospital.

The Asheville Police Department emphasized the critical importance of seatbelt use in a public statement following the crash.

Wearing a seatbelt can be the difference between life and death,” the department stated. “Buckling up can cut your risk of being killed or seriously injured in the event of a severe collision. Every trip, every time—make it a habit.”

The crash left a lasting impact on the local community, not only as another painful reminder of the dangers of roadway travel but also in the loss of a life that could potentially have been saved. The name of the passenger has not been released, and no other injuries were reported among the occupants of the Pontiac Firebird or Ford F-150.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash. Speed, distraction, and driver impairment have not been ruled out, and investigators are working to gather statements and available video footage from the scene.

The Asheville Police Department is calling for any witnesses or individuals with information about the crash to come forward.

As the investigation continues, the Asheville community is left grappling with yet another somber reminder of how quickly and tragically lives can change on the road. Zacharia Robert Cosgrove’s death adds to the growing toll of traffic-related fatalities across North Carolina, and police are urging all residents to recommit to safe driving habits—including the simple but life-saving act of wearing a seatbelt.
