Fatal Crash in Nevils Claims Life of Mother, Critically Injures Teenage Daughter
NEVILS, Ga. — The Nevils community is in mourning after a devastating two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 46 and Nevils-Denmark Road claimed the life of a local mother and left her teenage daughter fighting for her life.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at approximately 5:18 p.m. when Bulloch County 911 received the first call for help. Emergency responders — including Bulloch County EMS, Bulloch County Fire, Sheriff’s deputies, and Georgia State Patrol troopers — were dispatched immediately. Given the severity of the crash, additional rescue units and Lifestar medical helicopters were requested to assist at the scene.
Details of the Collision
According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary report, a tractor-trailer traveling westbound on Highway 46 failed to stop at the intersection’s stop sign. Despite the recent installation of advance warning rumble strips meant to alert drivers, the truck barreled through and collided with a Honda Odyssey van traveling southbound on Nevils-Denmark Road.
The impact was catastrophic. The tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side of the van, forcing the vehicle off the roadway. Emergency crews worked urgently to extract the victims and provide life-saving aid.
The van’s driver, a mother from the Nevils community, was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased. Her teenage daughter, a passenger in the van, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by Lifestar to Memorial Hospital in Savannah. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.
Bulloch County Coroner Chuck Francis confirmed the fatality but stated that the victim’s name is being withheld until all family members are properly notified.
Ongoing Investigation
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) responded to the site to conduct a thorough investigation into the deadly crash. Trooper First Class Matt Davis and Trooper Daniel Gay are leading the inquiry.
Authorities closed the intersection for several hours as investigators documented the scene, examined roadway conditions, and collected evidence. The investigation will focus not only on the actions of the truck driver but also on whether visibility, traffic controls, or other contributing factors played a role in the collision.
A Known Dangerous Intersection
Local residents are painfully aware of the risks at the intersection of Highway 46 and Nevils-Denmark Road. The area has long been considered hazardous due to its traffic volume and visibility challenges. In recent months, rumble strips were added in an effort to reduce the risk of collisions, but Tuesday’s tragedy underscores ongoing safety concerns.
Many in the community have already voiced frustration, calling for additional safety measures such as better signage, flashing lights, or even a traffic signal to prevent further loss of life.
A Community in Mourning
The death of a mother and the critical injuries sustained by her daughter have sent shockwaves through the tight-knit Nevils community. Neighbors, friends, and school officials are rallying around the family, offering prayers, condolences, and support during this heartbreaking time.
“This is just devastating for everyone who knows them,” one community member shared. “It’s a reminder that life can change in an instant, and our hearts go out to this family.”
Counseling services are expected to be made available for students and friends of the teenager as the community comes together to grieve and provide support.
Offering Condolences
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and the entire Nevils community affected by this tragic incident,” said Coroner Francis. “This is an unimaginable loss, and our thoughts remain with the loved ones who are facing such profound grief.”
As investigators continue their work, the family’s privacy is being respected. Updates will be provided once the deceased has been officially identified and further details are confirmed.
