Fatal Crash at Wood County Intersection Claims Life of Local Woman

Wood County, Ohio — A tragic two-vehicle crash in Wood County on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 67-year-old woman and left another individual hospitalized with injuries, according to a release from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision occurred at approximately at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and the southbound exit ramp from Interstate 75, a busy and often congested junction just outside of Bowling Green. Authorities say the crash involved a Chevy Traverse and a Jeep Cherokee, both of which sustained significant damage.

According to Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn, the incident unfolded when a Jeep Cherokee, descending the off-ramp from I-75 southbound, attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound Route 6. At the same time, a Chevy Traverse was traveling westbound on Route 6 and struck the Jeep on the driver’s side. The impact was severe.

Inside the Jeep were two occupants: 67-year-old Julia Coon of Pemberville, Ohio, and 19-year-old Devin Coon of Woodville, Ohio. Devin, who was behind the wheel, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo for treatment. Tragically, Julia Coon, a passenger in the vehicle, succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead at a Toledo-area hospital.

The driver of the Chevy Traverse was identified as 41-year-old Justin Fish of Hoytville, Ohio. Authorities did not report any injuries to Fish at this time.

No further details have been released regarding factors such as speed, weather conditions, or potential impairment, and it remains unclear if any citations will be issued. Sheriff Wasylyshyn confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and deputies are working to determine the precise cause of the crash. The sheriff’s office will also likely review surveillance footage from nearby traffic cameras, if available, and gather statements from any witnesses at the scene.

The intersection of U.S. 6 and the I-75 southbound exit ramp is known to be a complex area, with fast-moving traffic merging from multiple directions. The crash has once again raised concerns among local residents and officials about safety and visibility in that corridor.

“Our thoughts are with the Coon family during this difficult time,” said Sheriff Wasylyshyn. “We are committed to completing a thorough investigation to understand exactly what happened and prevent future tragedies.”

As news of the incident spread throughout the small communities of Woodville and Pemberville, residents expressed their sorrow and support for the Coon family. Friends and neighbors described Julia as a kind, community-oriented woman who was deeply loved by those who knew her.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant dashcam footage to contact the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
