Enid Hospital Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Suspect Identified
ENID, Okla. — Authorities have identified the suspect involved in a tragic officer-involved shooting at Integris Health Enid Hospital that claimed the lives of two people late Sunday night.
The gunman has been named as 46-year-old Dedrick Bloss, who opened fire inside the hospital on August 17, 2025, killing a security officer before being fatally shot by responding officers from the Enid Police Department.
A Security Officer Remembered
The victim has been identified as J.W. Bode, 72, a respected hospital security officer who is being remembered as a hero for his commitment to protecting patients, staff, and visitors. According to a statement shared by Integris Health Enid Hospital on social media Monday, Bode’s bravery and dedication will not be forgotten.
“Officer Bode was a beloved member of our hospital family,” the hospital’s statement read. “He gave his life in service to others, and his sacrifice reflects the very best of what it means to protect and care for our community.”
Friends, colleagues, and community members have since expressed their grief and admiration, recalling Bode as a kindhearted man who carried himself with humility, professionalism, and compassion. His loss has left a deep void not only within the hospital but across the city of Enid.
The Incident
Authorities report that the violence unfolded late Sunday night when Bloss entered the hospital and began shooting. Officer Bode was struck during the confrontation, and despite efforts to save his life, he died of his injuries.
Responding Enid police officers engaged the suspect shortly after, ultimately shooting and killing Bloss in the course of the incident. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the review of the case, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Investigation Ongoing
As of Monday, investigators are still piecing together the events that led to the hospital shooting, including determining a motive and whether Bloss had any prior connection to the facility. Authorities have not yet released further details about how Bloss gained access to the hospital or the sequence of events that led to the gunfire.
Officials stressed that the situation appears to have been isolated and that there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Community in Mourning
The Enid community has been left shaken by the events, with local leaders, residents, and hospital staff joining together in grief. Vigils are being planned in honor of J.W. Bode, whose legacy as a protector and caretaker is being celebrated even as loved ones mourn his loss.
Integris Health Enid Hospital said grief counselors will be available for staff, patients, and families impacted by the shooting, and security has been increased as a precaution.
A Hero’s Legacy
Though his life was tragically cut short, J.W. Bode is being remembered for his selflessness and courage. At 72 years old, he remained committed to serving and protecting others, a reflection of both his character and his deep sense of duty.
As Enid recovers from the shock of this senseless act of violence, residents say they will honor Officer Bode’s memory by supporting one another, standing together, and ensuring his sacrifice is never forgotten.
