ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira Police Investigate Two Overnight Shootings; Home Damaged, No Injuries Reported
ELMIRA, NY – A quiet Sunday evening in Elmira was disrupted by the sound of gunfire, prompting a swift police response and raising community concerns about growing violence in the area. The Elmira Police Department (EPD) has confirmed that it is actively investigating two separate shooting incidents that occurred between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, one of which left a residential home damaged by gunfire.
According to a press release issued by EPD, the first reports of shots fired came in around 11:33 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, from the 300 block of Fulton Street. Officers responded promptly and conducted a thorough search of the area. However, they were initially unable to locate any physical evidence to confirm that a shooting had taken place. No shell casings, damage, or eyewitnesses were found at the scene.
Roughly an hour later, at 12:38 a.m. on Monday, June 9, a second call came in reporting more gunshots—this time in the 500 block of West Gray Street. Upon arriving in the area, officers discovered multiple shell casings scattered on the ground and observed visible gunfire damage to a nearby home on Grove Street. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
The EPD credits the city’s new Flock Raven ShotSpotter system with helping them quickly identify the origin of the gunfire. The technology, recently implemented to improve public safety and response times, is designed to detect gunshots in real-time and alert law enforcement to their exact location. Officials say this system played a critical role in the early detection and response to Monday morning’s incident.
Investigation Ongoing
At this time, police have not disclosed whether the two shootings are connected, nor have they named any suspects. Detectives are actively gathering evidence, canvassing nearby properties for surveillance footage, and speaking with potential witnesses. The department is urging anyone with knowledge of the incidents to come forward, as even the smallest detail may help in resolving the cases.
The damage to the Grove Street home is being documented as part of the investigation. While no residents were physically harmed, the psychological toll of having one’s home struck by bullets is considerable. The EPD has reassured the public that they are working diligently to determine the motive and individuals responsible for the gunfire.
Community Response and Ongoing Safety Measures
These incidents have stirred concern among Elmira residents, many of whom took to social media overnight to express unease over the rise in gun-related violence. Although no injuries have been reported, the fact that homes are being struck by bullets has many questioning the safety of their neighborhoods.
The Elmira Police Department, in conjunction with city leaders, continues to advocate for proactive policing strategies, including the recent revival of the department’s K-9 program, funded through a grant. The department is also collaborating with community organizations to reduce gun violence and restore public trust through engagement and visibility.
Call for Public Assistance
The EPD is asking anyone with information related to the incidents to contact the department directly at 607-737-5626. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call the EPD tip line at 607-271-HALT (4258).
As the investigation continues, law enforcement is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and is encouraging the public to remain alert and cooperative. Further updates will be provided as new details emerge.
