Decatur Police Investigating Labor Day Shooting That Left One Dead
DECATUR, Ill. — A deadly shooting late on Labor Day has left the Decatur community mourning the loss of 55-year-old Tracy Cunningham, while police continue to search for answers and the person responsible.
According to the Decatur Police Department, officers were called to the 1200 block of East Wood Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered Cunningham suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving measures performed by first responders, Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives immediately secured the area and began canvassing for witnesses. The Macon County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Cunningham’s identity on Tuesday morning. An autopsy has been scheduled, and the results are expected to provide additional insight into the circumstances of his death.
Police said it remains unclear what led to the shooting. Investigators are working to determine whether Cunningham was specifically targeted or if the incident was random. No suspects have been publicly identified, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“This was a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel. “Our detectives are working around the clock to track down the individual or individuals responsible, but we also need the public’s help. If anyone saw or heard anything in that area Monday night, please contact us or Crime Stoppers.”
The shooting has rattled residents in the neighborhood, who described hearing a series of loud gunshots followed by sirens. Some said the area has struggled with sporadic gun violence, though the killing of Cunningham — described by friends as a quiet, hardworking man — struck many as especially shocking.
“Tracy was a good guy, someone who always tried to help others,” said a neighbor. “It’s heartbreaking that his life was taken this way.”
In the wake of the tragedy, local leaders and community advocates renewed calls for addressing gun violence in Decatur. Organizations dedicated to violence prevention have emphasized the need for community cooperation with law enforcement, as well as greater support for programs aimed at reducing crime.
Cunningham’s death marks yet another fatal shooting in Decatur this year, continuing a troubling trend that has left families across the city grappling with grief.
Funeral arrangements for Tracy Cunningham are pending, and his family has asked for privacy as they mourn his sudden loss.
The investigation remains active, with police vowing to pursue every lead until justice is served. Authorities encourage anyone with information to contact the Decatur Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Macon County.
