Deadly Sunday Morning Shooting at Barton’s Landing Apartments: Man Claims Self-Defense Amid Chaos

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — A quiet Sunday morning was shattered by gunfire at Barton’s Landing Place Apartments in Fayetteville, where a man was fatally shot and another taken into custody after a dramatic confrontation that has left residents shaken and authorities searching for answers.

The shooting occurred around 9:00 a.m. at the apartment complex, located off Cliffdale Road near Bunce Road. According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots and arrived on scene to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel quickly transported the victim to a nearby hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing and surreal scene as the suspect — a man who fired the fatal shots — reportedly remained at the complex, visibly distressed and pacing the parking lot while still armed with an AR-style rifle. Residents say the man was shouting in apparent frustration, drawing the attention of neighbors who peered out from behind blinds and doorways in fear. Eventually, the man reportedly laid down in the lot and waited for officers to arrive, surrendering peacefully. Another individual standing near him was also taken into custody, though their role remains unclear.

The man who fired the shots claimed to have acted in self-defense. According to statements he made to law enforcement, he was ambushed by unknown assailants who were waiting for him and fired first. He asserted that he did not know the individuals who allegedly targeted him and that he returned fire in fear for his life.

Witnesses said they heard a barrage of gunfire erupt through the normally peaceful complex, prompting some residents to take cover while others attempted to make sense of the unfolding chaos. One person allegedly involved in the incident fled the scene and is still being sought by investigators.

As of now, the identities of those involved have not been released, and the nature of the confrontation remains under investigation. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit has taken the lead on the case, working to verify the shooter’s claims and locate additional suspects.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have relevant information to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling (910) 483-TIPS (8477) or by contacting Detective C. Johnson directly at (910) 584-6703.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are expected to release further details, including possible charges, as more information becomes available.
