Deadly Shooting at Gulfport Church Gathering: Authorities Seek 18-Year-Old Malik Sampson

Authorities are now urgently seeking 18-year-old Malik Sampson, who has been identified as the suspect in a deadly shooting that left one person dead and two others injured.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:05 p.m. outside the Jack and Florence Goldin Sportsplex, where the church was hosting an outdoor event filled with families, children, and churchgoers. The gathering, which was part of the church’s outreach mission to bring the community together, quickly turned into a crime scene that has left a community shaken and mourning.
Domestic Dispute Escalates into Violence
According to early reports from the Gulfport Police Department, the shooting stemmed from what officials are describing as a “domestic dispute gone wrong.” Witnesses and investigators state that a young woman invited the father of her child—identified as Malik Sampson—to the event, hoping to give him the opportunity to spend time with their baby in a safe, public setting.
However, what was intended to be a peaceful moment between father and child turned into a confrontation. One of the church members, who also served as the deacon and head of the church’s security team, reportedly observed Sampson holding the baby while also visibly armed with a firearm—an alarming and dangerous combination that prompted immediate concern.
As the deacon and other church members approached Sampson and words were exchanged, Sampson suddenly backed away and opened fire. The first victim, the deacon, was struck and fell to the ground. In a chilling turn, the gunman allegedly shot the deacon a second time while he was down.
Despite his severe injuries, the deacon—demonstrating incredible bravery and commitment to protect others—managed to return fire, reportedly striking the shooter before collapsing.
Two other individuals sustained injuries during the chaos, though their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed. Emergency medical teams responded rapidly, transporting the victims to local hospitals for treatment. Tragically, the deacon succumbed to his injuries, and was later pronounced dead.
Suspect at Large: Malik Sampson
Law enforcement officials have since launched a manhunt for Malik Sampson, who reportedly fled the scene after the shooting.
