Deadly Night in East Toledo: Two Young Men Killed, Multiple Victims in Overnight Shootings
TOLEDO, Ohio — Tragedy struck East Toledo in the early hours of Saturday morning as two separate but eerily timed shootings claimed the lives of two 20-year-old men and left at least two others injured. Toledo police are now working around the clock to determine if the incidents are connected and to find those responsible.
First Shooting: Salvador Ruiz Killed on Platt Street
The first call came just after midnight. Officers were dispatched to the area near Platt and 1st Streets in East Toledo, where they discovered a car with two individuals inside. One of the occupants, 20-year-old Salvador Ruiz, had been shot at least once. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The second person in the vehicle, whose name has not been released, was not injured in the shooting. Detectives have classified Ruiz’s death as a homicide, and crime scene investigators combed the area for clues well into the early morning hours.
Ruiz’s death has sent shockwaves through his neighborhood and social circle. Known for his friendly demeanor and quiet nature, friends and family have begun posting tributes on social media, sharing memories and demanding justice.
Minutes Later, Second Shooting on Nevada Street: Amir Thomas-Clair Also Killed
As officers worked the first crime scene, another emergency call came in — just three minutes away on Nevada Street. A car had crashed near the intersection, and inside were three young men, two of whom had been shot.
One of them, identified as Amir Thomas-Clair, 20, had been shot at least once. He was transported to the hospital but, like Ruiz, died from his injuries.
The second shooting victim inside the vehicle was critically wounded and remains hospitalized. His name has not yet been released. A third occupant of the car escaped physical harm and is being interviewed by police as part of the investigation.
The proximity in time and location between the two shootings has fueled speculation that they may be connected, although Toledo police have not yet confirmed any link. Officers are continuing to investigate both cases separately but have acknowledged that the circumstances are suspicious.
Community Left Reeling
The twin tragedies have rattled residents in East Toledo, many of whom say they are exhausted by the violence plaguing their streets. While police maintain a presence and continue their investigation, community members are calling for stronger intervention and more resources for youth in the area.
“It’s getting too close to home,” said one resident who lives near Platt Street. “These are kids, just 20 years old. What future is left for our city if we keep losing them like this?”
Police Urging Public to Help
At this time, no arrests have been made, and police have not identified any suspects in either shooting. The Toledo Police Department is asking the public for help, emphasizing that tips can be submitted anonymously.
“If you know anything, no matter how small it may seem, we urge you to contact us,” a department spokesperson said. “You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.”
Those with information are encouraged to call or text Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.

Was this a coordinated act of violence? Were the victims targeted, or was this the result of a personal dispute turned deadly? As of now, police are keeping their cards close, focused on gathering evidence and bringing justice to the victims and their families.
The city of Toledo now finds itself once again caught in the cycle of gun violence — one that demands not just law enforcement action, but community healing, support, and change.
