Cyclist in Her 20s Killed in Cork City Collision Involving Truck

A young woman in her 20s was killed in a crash while cycling in Cork City on Thursday evening, in a collision involving a truck. The fatal incident marks the third death of a cyclist in Ireland in the past week, following two other crashes in Co Meath and Co Carlow last Friday.

Collision in Cork City

According to Gardaí, the collision occurred shortly after 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, 18 September 2025, at the junction of Albert Street and Albert Road. Emergency services were called to the scene, where the cyclist was pronounced dead.

Her body was later removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The road was immediately closed to allow Garda forensic collision investigators to conduct a technical examination. Traffic diversions were put in place, leading to significant congestion in the city centre during rush hour.

Garda Appeal for Information

Garda Headquarters issued a public appeal on Friday morning, urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage – including dash-cam – and were travelling in the area between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, 18 September 2025 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí,” the statement read.

Witnesses or anyone with relevant information are asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station at 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

A Deadly Week for Cyclists

This tragedy is the third fatal crash involving a cyclist in just seven days. On Friday, 12 September, a cyclist was killed in Co Meath, followed by another fatal collision on the same day in Co Carlow. Road safety advocates have described the spate of deaths as “deeply alarming” and a “wake-up call” for urgent action.

Community and Safety Concerns

Cycling advocacy groups have long raised concerns about road safety, particularly at busy urban junctions where cyclists and heavy goods vehicles often cross paths.

The Cork crash has renewed calls for improved protected cycling infrastructure, stricter enforcement of road safety laws, and greater awareness among motorists sharing the road with cyclists.

Local residents expressed their grief and frustration at the scene. “This is a terrible loss of a young life, and it should never have happened,” one commuter said while passing the closed junction. “Every week we hear of more tragedies. Something has to change.”

Ongoing Investigation

The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been released, pending notification of her family. Gardaí confirmed that the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

As the probe continues, Cork City and the wider cycling community mourn another life lost on Irish roads, highlighting once again the urgent need for safer conditions for vulnerable road users.
