COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Authorities are investigating a late-night crash that left one person dead and another under suspicion of impaired driving, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
The incident occurred around 10:37 p.m. Friday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 24 and 26th Street, an area just west of downtown that sees a mix of residential traffic and late-night commuters.
Police said a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 24 struck a pedestrian in the roadway. Emergency calls quickly brought CSPD officers, troopers with the Colorado State Patrol, and members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department to the scene. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with law enforcement. Preliminary reports indicate the driver may have been impaired at the time of the collision. CSPD confirmed the motorist is under investigation for possible DUI-related charges.
The crash forced authorities to close multiple lanes of Highway 24 in both directions for several hours while the Major Crash Team conducted a full reconstruction of the incident. Traffic was diverted through nearby neighborhoods, causing delays well into the early hours of Saturday morning.
Residents and passersby described a heavy law enforcement presence and flashing lights illuminating the roadway as crews worked the scene. “It was a very sobering sight,” said one witness. “There were so many emergency vehicles, and you could tell something very serious had happened.”
This latest crash adds to a growing number of traffic-related fatalities in Colorado Springs in 2025. According to CSPD, impaired driving remains one of the leading contributing factors in fatal crashes across the city. Officials used the tragedy to remind drivers of the dangers of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
“This is yet another heartbreaking example of how impaired driving can destroy lives,” a CSPD spokesperson said. “We urge everyone to make the responsible choice—don’t drive if you’ve been drinking or using substances.”
The victim’s identity and further details about the driver will be released as the investigation develops. CSPD is encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact their Major Crash Investigations Unit.
As of Saturday afternoon, no charges had been formally filed, and the case remains under active investigation.
