Charleston Man Arrested and Charged with Murder in Connection to Johnson Street Shooting That Killed 24-Year-Old Woman
CHARLESTON, S.C. — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a late April shooting that tragically claimed the life of a young woman in downtown Charleston. The Charleston Police Department announced the arrest and subsequent upgrade of charges against Kenneth Da’Quan Gilliard, a resident of Charleston, in a news release issued Friday.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 27, on Johnson Street, a typically quiet area that was shaken by sudden violence when shots rang out during what police now say was a targeted altercation. The victim, 24-year-old Briana Cason, was found at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds and later died from her injuries. Authorities have not disclosed whether she was the intended target or an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Gilliard was initially arrested on Thursday and charged with three counts of first-degree assault and battery. However, after further investigation and consultation with the Charleston County Solicitor’s Office, those charges were upgraded on Friday to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
This marks the second arrest made in connection to the case. While police have not yet publicly identified the other suspect, they noted that additional details would be forthcoming as the investigation progresses. Officials emphasized that the arrests were the result of collaborative efforts between detectives, forensic analysts, and community members who came forward with information critical to the case.
