BURRELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A 102-year-old woman has died following a traffic collision in Indiana County on Friday, according to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). Authorities reported that the crash occurred before 4 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 22 and Resort Plaza Drive in Burrell Township.
Troopers said the incident unfolded when an eastbound vehicle on State Route 22 ran a steady red light, colliding with another vehicle that had a green light while making a left-hand turn from Resort Plaza Drive. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles, prompting a rapid emergency response from local first responders.
Pennsylvania State Police and Indiana County Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The 102-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle with the right-of-way, was immediately treated by paramedics but tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, who ran the red light, remained on the scene and was questioned by troopers. PSP confirmed that preliminary findings suggest failure to obey traffic signals was the primary factor in the crash, though a full investigation, including possible impairment or distraction, is ongoing.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with emergency vehicles quickly filling the intersection and traffic backed up for several blocks. “It was shocking to see such a severe crash,” said one bystander. “We saw the impact and knew it was serious. Everyone was praying for the people involved.”
Authorities temporarily closed the intersection to allow for accident reconstruction, evidence collection, and roadway cleanup. PSP noted that State Route 22 is a heavily traveled corridor, and they urged drivers in the area to remain alert and obey traffic signals to prevent similar tragedies.
Family members and community leaders expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the centenarian, describing her as a cherished member of the community. “She lived a remarkable life and was loved by everyone who knew her,” said one family member. “Her passing in such a sudden and tragic manner is heartbreaking.”
The Pennsylvania State Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area to contact the PSP Indiana barracks to assist with the investigation. Troopers also reminded drivers of the importance of obeying traffic signals and staying attentive at all times, noting that even a momentary lapse can have devastating consequences.
As the investigation continues, authorities confirmed that all involved parties are cooperating. Charges related to the traffic violation and any potential contributing factors will be determined once the investigation is complete.
