Breaking: Peace River Man Charged with Manslaughter in Shooting Death of Anton Vincent Carifell
Peace River, Alberta — The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has charged a Peace River man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this month at Riverfront Park, claiming the life of 35-year-old Anton Vincent Carifell of McLennan.
The Shooting
On August 12, 2025, at approximately 3:10 a.m., Peace River RCMP responded to a report of a shooting in the downtown area near Riverfront Park. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim, later identified as Anton Vincent Carifell, was conscious when police and EMS crews arrived and was transported to hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, Carifell’s condition worsened, and he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Investigation and Autopsy
Following Carifell’s hospitalization, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) assumed carriage of the investigation. On August 14, 2025, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton conducted an autopsy and confirmed that Carifell’s death was a homicide caused by a firearm.
This confirmation elevated the case into a full-scale homicide investigation, with detectives piecing together the events leading up to the early-morning shooting.
Arrest and Charges
As part of their investigation, RCMP identified and arrested Kelleo Alook, 25, of Peace River. On August 17, 2025, police announced that Alook has been formally charged with manslaughter in connection with Carifell’s death.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, RCMP confirmed that Alook is also facing related firearm offenses, though full details of those charges have not yet been released. He remains in custody pending a court appearance.
Community Impact
The fatal shooting has left residents of both Peace River and McLennan shaken. Riverfront Park, typically a peaceful community space along the river, has now become the focus of a violent crime that claimed the life of a young man known to many in the region.
Carifell’s death has spurred calls from community members for more proactive measures to curb violent crime in northern Alberta towns, where recent years have seen an increase in firearm-related incidents.
Ongoing Investigation
RCMP Major Crimes detectives continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting, including whether the suspect and victim knew one another prior to the incident, and what may have led to the fatal confrontation.
The Alberta RCMP is asking anyone with information about the case to contact Peace River RCMP directly or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Sheriff’s Office Statement
In announcing the arrest, RCMP officials emphasized the importance of swift action and thorough investigation in homicide cases:
“Our members worked quickly to identify and apprehend a suspect in this tragic case,” the RCMP statement read. “We remain committed to pursuing justice for Mr. Carifell and his family.”
Looking Ahead
As the legal proceedings move forward, the family of Anton Vincent Carifell is left to grieve the sudden and violent loss of a loved one, while the community grapples with the shock of a homicide in its downtown core.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Kelleo Alook will face the courts on charges that could carry significant prison time if convicted.
