Ben Mourer Obituary – Meadville, Pennsylvania
MEADVILLE, PA — The Allegheny College community and the wider athletic world are mourning the heartbreaking and untimely loss of Ben Mourer, beloved head coach of the college’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Ben passed away tragically on Sunday, June 15, 2025, following a devastating accident involving a falling tree at his home in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His sudden death has left a deep void in the lives of family, friends, colleagues, students, and athletes whose lives he so deeply impacted.
Ben Mourer was more than just a coach—he was a mentor, motivator, friend, and role model. A proud alumnus of Allegheny College, Ben had returned to his alma mater with the same energy, passion, and integrity that made him a standout student-athlete during his own collegiate years. His return to Allegheny as head coach marked a full-circle moment, one that saw him nurture generations of student-athletes with his wisdom, unwavering support, and deep love for the sport.
Known for his calm demeanor, kind heart, and relentless dedication, Coach Mourer transformed the Allegheny Track & Field and Cross Country programs through hard work and deep-rooted belief in the potential of every athlete. To his runners, he was more than just a coach—he was family. He guided his athletes not only toward personal bests and podium finishes but also toward becoming resilient, compassionate, and grounded individuals.
“Ben wasn’t just a coach—he was the soul of our program,” said one student-athlete. “He knew how to push us without breaking us, how to listen when we needed him, and how to lead by example.”
Under his leadership, Allegheny’s distance programs flourished with championship performances and academic achievements alike. Yet Ben’s legacy goes beyond stats and trophies—it’s found in the lives he touched and the community he built.
Beyond campus, Ben was a devoted husband, father, son, and friend. Those close to him describe a man who radiated humility, laughter, and love—someone who found joy in quiet moments, early morning runs, family hikes, and quality time with his loved ones. His love for the outdoors, which so often served as a backdrop for his life and career, made the nature of his passing especially tragic.
Authorities reported that the accident occurred as Ben was tending to his property when a tree unexpectedly fell, fatally injuring him. Despite efforts by emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The community has responded with an outpouring of grief and support for his family, who have requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
In a statement, Allegheny College President Hilary Link wrote:
“The Allegheny College family has suffered an immeasurable loss. Ben Mourer was an exceptional coach, mentor, and member of our community. He embodied everything we hope to inspire in our students—integrity, passion, perseverance, and compassion. His impact will live on in all who knew him.”
A memorial service to honor Ben’s life and contributions to the college and community is being planned. In the meantime, grief counselors and campus support services have been made available to students, staff, and athletes coping with the devastating news.
Tributes have also poured in from alumni, fellow coaches across the country, and former teammates—each one echoing the same sentiments: Ben was one of the best, and his absence will be felt forever.
In his memory, the college is establishing the Ben Mourer Memorial Fund, which will support future student-athletes and promote the values Ben championed throughout his life—dedication, humility, and heart.
Ben Mourer’s life was a testament to what it means to lead with compassion and purpose. He may be gone far too soon, but his legacy will endure—in every mile run, in every life uplifted, and in every finish line crossed with courage.
Rest in peace, Coach Mourer. You ran a beautiful race.
