Authorities Identify Pedestrian Killed on Interstate 82 in Yakima County

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. — Authorities have identified the pedestrian killed in a tragic accident on Interstate 82 Wednesday night as 29-year-old Jorge G. Estrada Martinez. The incident has raised questions about highway safety and the dangers pedestrians face on high-speed roadways.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-82 near Granger. Troopers reported that Estrada Martinez was walking along or attempting to cross the interstate when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Emergency personnel were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, Estrada Martinez was pronounced dead.

Investigators are working to determine why Estrada Martinez was on the roadway and what factors contributed to the fatal accident. Authorities noted that the driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time, though the inquiry is ongoing.

The crash forced the temporary closure of part of the interstate as officials cleared the scene and collected evidence. Traffic was diverted for several hours, causing delays for late-night travelers in the area.

Local residents expressed shock at the tragedy. “It’s heartbreaking to hear about someone losing their life this way,” said one Yakima County driver. “The interstate is dangerous for pedestrians, and this just shows how quickly things can turn fatal.”

Friends and family of Estrada Martinez are mourning his sudden loss. Social media has been filled with messages of grief, remembrance, and support for his loved ones. Those close to him described him as a hardworking individual who cared deeply about his family.

The Washington State Patrol has reminded the public that interstates are not safe for pedestrians under any circumstances and that individuals should use designated crossings and sidewalks in safer areas. Authorities also urged drivers to remain alert, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

Funeral arrangements for Jorge G. Estrada Martinez have not yet been announced. Officials said updates will be provided as the investigation continues.

This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on high-speed highways and underscores the importance of vigilance for both drivers and individuals traveling on foot.
