Authorities Identify Palm Bay Man Killed in Melbourne Traffic Accident

MELBOURNE, Fla. — (Sept. 11, 2025) – Police have identified the victim of a fatal crash that occurred Thursday morning in Melbourne as 50-year-old Roy Breault of Palm Bay. The accident has left family members and the community grieving as investigators work to piece together the events that led to his death.

The Crash

According to the Melbourne Police Department, officers responded to reports of a serious collision just before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Sarno Road and Wickham Road, a heavily traveled corridor during the morning commute.

Preliminary findings indicate that Breault was driving a sedan when his vehicle collided with a commercial truck. The force of the impact caused catastrophic damage to Breault’s car, leaving him trapped inside. Fire rescue crews worked to extricate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, whose name has not been released, was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No other vehicles were directly involved.

Victim Identified

Breault, a longtime Palm Bay resident, was known among friends and neighbors as a hardworking man devoted to his family. Relatives shared that he leaves behind a wife and two adult children.

“He was the kind of guy who would drop everything to help someone in need,” said one family friend. “It’s hard to imagine our neighborhood without him.”

Investigation Underway

Police have not determined whether speed, distraction, or impairment were factors in the crash. The Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, and officers are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Witnesses are being urged to come forward with information that may clarify the sequence of events.

Authorities said it may take several weeks before investigators release a final report. Toxicology testing for both drivers is standard procedure in fatal crashes.

Community Concerns

The intersection where the crash occurred has long been considered one of Melbourne’s busiest and most dangerous. Local residents have frequently complained about congestion and aggressive driving during rush-hour traffic.

According to Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) data, Brevard County recorded more than 100 traffic-related fatalities in 2024, reflecting a troubling rise compared to the previous year. Advocates say the latest crash underscores the urgent need for roadway improvements and stronger enforcement of traffic laws.

Remembering Roy Breault

As news of Breault’s passing spread, friends and relatives began sharing tributes on social media. Photos of him fishing with his children, barbecuing at family gatherings, and cheering at local sports games reflect a man who valued simple joys and close connections.

Funeral arrangements are pending, and the family has asked for privacy while they grieve. Supporters have already launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover expenses and assist the family through this sudden loss.
