Authorities Identify 71-Year-Old Man Who Drowned at Two Rivers Park

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 9, 2025) – The Pulaski County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who drowned at Two Rivers Park earlier this week as 71-year-old Steven Sherrill of Little Rock.

The Incident

Emergency crews were called to Two Rivers Park on the evening of September 7, after witnesses reported a man struggling in the water near the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Maumelle rivers. Bystanders attempted to reach him, but strong currents carried him out of sight before help could arrive.

The Little Rock Fire Department’s dive team launched a search that lasted several hours. Sherrill’s body was recovered the following morning about a half-mile downstream.

Victim Identified

The coroner’s office confirmed Sherrill’s identity on Tuesday, notifying family members before releasing the information publicly. Friends and neighbors described him as an active retiree who often visited the park for walks and fishing.

“Steven was a gentle soul who loved the outdoors,” said one longtime neighbor. “He spent a lot of time near the water, so this is heartbreaking.”

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Authorities have not released details about what led to the drowning, but they do not suspect foul play. Officials noted that water levels in the area were unusually high due to recent rainfall, creating fast-moving currents that can be deceptive to even experienced swimmers and boaters.

Little Rock Police spokesperson Sgt. Alicia Moore urged caution:
“Two Rivers Park is one of our community’s most beautiful places, but it’s also dangerous if safety precautions aren’t followed. We strongly advise visitors to avoid swimming in unmonitored areas and to always wear flotation devices when near the river.”

Community Impact

Sherrill’s death has prompted renewed discussions about water safety in central Arkansas. Local advocates have been pushing for clearer signage at parks and riverside trails, warning visitors about undertows and drop-offs in the riverbed.

The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism says it will review safety measures at Two Rivers Park, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.Remembering Steven Sherrill

Family members are planning a memorial service later this week. Relatives said Sherrill was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time with his family and had a lifelong passion for fishing.

“He loved this city and this river,” a family statement read. “We take comfort in knowing he passed away in a place he loved, though far too soon.”
