Anthony Marsh, Selma, AL Gunshot Wounds: 18-Year-Old Killed in Heartbreaking Shooting; Community Mourns a Young Life Lost Far Too Soon
SELMA, AL – A devastating wave of grief has swept across Selma as the community grapples with the heartbreaking loss of Anthony Marsh, an 18-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of gun violence early Sunday morning. The shooting occurred around 3:00 a.m. on the 2500 block of Summerfield Road, jolting an otherwise quiet neighborhood into chaos and heartbreak.
According to Selma Police Lieutenant Ray Blanks, officers responded to a call reporting gunfire in the area. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered Anthony Marsh suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, Marsh was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He was just 18. He had his whole life ahead of him,” Lt. Blanks said solemnly. “This is a tragedy in every sense of the word.”
Another individual — a female — was also injured in the shooting and was rushed to Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery, where she is reportedly in stable condition. Her identity has not been released, and police have not confirmed the extent of her involvement or connection to the events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities say the circumstances remain under active investigation, but early indications point to an altercation that escalated into gunfire. “At this time, we know there was some type of confrontation, but the exact cause is still under investigation,” said Lt. Blanks.
Two individuals have been detained for questioning, according to Dallas County District Attorney Robert Turner, Jr., but no arrests have been made as of now. Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A Beloved Life Taken Too Soon
News of Anthony’s death has left family, friends, and neighbors reeling. Described as a respectful, kind-hearted young man with a bright spirit, Anthony was just beginning to carve out his path in the world. He had recently graduated high school and had dreams that reached far beyond Selma. Those who knew him best speak of a young man full of life, laughter, and quiet determination.
“He always had a smile on his face,” said a close friend. “Anthony didn’t bother anyone. He had dreams, big dreams — to make it out, to build something better. He didn’t deserve this.”
Community members have gathered at the scene, leaving flowers, candles, and handwritten notes in his memory. A growing memorial reflects the sorrow of a city too familiar with loss.
“He was like a little brother to many of us,” said a local youth pastor. “His life was valuable, his future was valuable. And now we’re left asking why.”
An Urgent Call for Change
The shooting marks yet another painful chapter in Selma’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. City leaders, clergy, and activists are once again calling for action and unity, urging the community to speak out and work together to address the root causes of the violence that continues to claim young lives.
“Our hearts are broken,” said Mayor James Perkins Jr. in a brief statement. “One more child has been taken. One more family is grieving. We cannot allow this to become normal.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Selma Police at (334) 874-1161 or Crimestoppers at 215-STOP. All tips can remain anonymous.
Honoring Anthony’s Memory
A candlelight vigil is being planned in Anthony’s honor, and local churches have opened their doors to offer counseling and prayer services to those affected by the tragedy. Plans for a funeral service are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
Though Anthony Marsh’s life was taken far too soon, his spirit endures in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His name will not be forgotten — not in Selma, not in the fight for justice, and not in the calls for peace that will continue in his memory.
Rest in power, Anthony. May your light shine on through the love you left behind. 🕊️💔
