Beaufort Community Mourns the Loss of Juan Tahual-Lopez in Tragic Bluffton Collision

The Beaufort community is grappling with the devastating loss of Juan Tahual-Lopez, a 43-year-old father of four daughters, who tragically lost his life in a six-vehicle collision on Monday, May 19, 2025. The fatal accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and White Oak Circle in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Details of the Incident

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision involved six vehicles: a 2019 Ford pickup, a 2015 Lexus sedan, a 2017 Toyota pickup, a 2019 Nissan sedan, a 2006 Chevrolet pickup, and a 2024 Toyota van. The Ford pickup, traveling west on U.S. 278, struck the Lexus sedan and Toyota pickup before crossing the center line and colliding with the eastbound Nissan sedan and Chevrolet pickup. Subsequently, the Toyota van crashed into both the Ford pickup and the Chevrolet pickup. Juan Tahual-Lopez, the sole occupant of the Chevrolet pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene due to blunt force injuries.

Deputy Chief Adam Corn, who oversaw operations on-site, remarked, “This was a difficult incident for everyone involved. Our crews, along with our partners in EMS and law enforcement, responded with care, coordination, and professionalism under very difficult circumstances.” 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. Authorities have urged drivers to remain vigilant, especially as the summer travel season commences.
