Motorist Killed in Vermilion Parish Single-Vehicle Crash

KAPLAN, LA — Louisiana State Police Troop I is investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash that occurred late Saturday night in Vermilion Parish, claiming the life of a 40-year-old woman from Crowley.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on May 17, 2025, Troopers were dispatched to a crash site along Louisiana Highway 335, near Teche Road, just south of Kaplan. Upon arrival, they discovered that a 2017 Ford Mustang, driven by Sommer Simon, had veered off the roadway and crashed into several trees before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

Details of the Crash

Preliminary findings indicate that Simon was traveling westbound on LA 335 when, for reasons still unknown, her vehicle left the road to the left, left the pavement, and collided with multiple trees. The severe impact caused the vehicle to ignite and become consumed by fire before emergency responders could intervene.

Despite rescue efforts, Sommer Simon suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the intensity of the crash and fire, Troopers are still working to determine whether seatbelts were in use at the time of the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

This crash remains under active investigation as Troopers seek to understand the factors that may have led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. Authorities have not ruled out potential contributing causes such as driver impairment, distraction, or fatigue, all of which are common factors in serious motor vehicle crashes. Toxicology samples were collected for standard analysis as part of the investigation.

State Police Urge Caution Behind the Wheel

In a statement, Louisiana State Police Troop I offered their condolences to the family and friends of Sommer Simon and issued a strong reminder to the public:

“Every fatal crash is a painful reminder of the importance of safe driving habits. Avoid distractions, never drive impaired or fatigued, and always wear your seatbelt. These choices can save lives.”

State Troopers stressed that while not all crashes are avoidable, the risk of serious injury or death can be greatly reduced by following basic safety measures. They continue to encourage all drivers to remain alert, cautious, and responsible behind the wheel.

Victim Remembered

Friends and members of the Crowley community are mourning the unexpected loss of Sommer Simon, who was described by those who knew her as kind-hearted, vivacious, and always full of energy. A memorial is expected to be planned by her family in the coming days.
