In Loving Memory of Senior Correctional Police Officer Thurman Johnson
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Senior Correctional Police Officer Thurman Johnson. His untimely departure has left a deep void within the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC), and he will be sorely missed by colleagues, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
SCPO Johnson began his honorable service with the New Jersey Department of Corrections in November 2016 at the Central Reception and Assignment Facility (CRAF). From the outset, he exhibited the discipline, integrity, and unwavering dedication that are the hallmarks of a true correctional professional. His commitment to maintaining safety and upholding the mission of the Department was evident in every aspect of his work.
After his time at CRAF, SCPO Johnson transferred to the Garden State Correctional Facility, where he continued to serve with distinction. In each assignment, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors alike through his professionalism, sense of duty, and quiet strength.
Eventually, SCPO Johnson made his way to South Woods State Prison (SWSP), where he remained a vital and respected member of the correctional community until his passing. Known for his calm demeanor, his willingness to mentor others, and his unwavering sense of camaraderie, SCPO Johnson was more than just a coworker—he was a brother in uniform, a friend, and a source of support to those around him.
His loss is not only a personal one to those who worked by his side, but a significant one to the Department as a whole. The NJDOC is built upon the commitment and sacrifices of individuals like SCPO Johnson—men and women who serve with honor, often in challenging and unseen circumstances, to protect the public and ensure justice is carried out with dignity.
As we mourn the loss of SCPO Johnson, we also celebrate the life he lived, the service he gave, and the countless lives he touched through his work and his presence. His legacy of dedication, integrity, and quiet courage will continue to inspire us all.
